A bizarre incident

happened this weekend while on a weekend cruise. The alternator brackets on my Yanmar YSB-12 broke at the motor. This is most distressing since that model is no longer manufactured and I will have to find a used part, meaning the whole front engine plate where the brackets are a part of the plate, if there is no other alternative. The motor itself is fine and runs great. My question to all is, do I have an alternative? Has anyone had this happen and how was it resolved? Any ideas, short of repowering, will be most appreciated. Thanks, Roland S/V Fraulein II

Take the old part......

to a machine shop and see if they could fabricate one for you. Probably would be able to make it stronger than the original too.

Just ask Steve

No need to post this question, just ask Steve directly. I just have one question, which I beleive I am not the only one that asks: does Steve really exist, or is he a virtual image ? Spring is comming around here (six weeks), I am comming out of hibernation ! Sincerement, Jean

are you sure?

Are you sure you can't get the part? Lots of parts for out of production Yanmars are still made.

Roland; Try Heli Arc Welding? I Would.

Maybe they can do it in place. That's where I'd start. Failing that, I try fabricating something new. The same guy that could do the heli-arc could probably fabricate something. Hang in there. There is a solution. RD

Fix for YSB12 alternator mounts

Roland I just finished about a month ago overhauling my YSB-12. There were no problems getting parts -- just the parts prices were hard to believe. Now when we had the engine broken down we discovered that the front engine cover (which is really the timing gear cover) was cracked thru in the area of the mounts for the alternator. It was a simple job for the local welder to repair. I believe he charged $25 for the cover repair and to weld a leak in the fuel tank -- also aluminum. I am not sure because I had the whole engine out but I think it should be relatively easy to remove the timing gear cover while the engine is in the boat. Good luck. You have got a good engine. Even after 23 years there was only minimal wear on most of the parts. Henry

A Thank-you

to all who responed so quickly to my bizarre incident inquiry. I do have a lead on a Yanmar bone yard in Pensacola and am waiting for a reply from them. After talking with my mechanic, it is apparent that the cover is going to have to come off whether I change it out or have it repaired. At this point, repairing it may be the way to go. I am going to start breaking it down tomorrow and will keep the progress posted in this and the Cherubini forum. Hopefully we will, as we have in the past, learn much from each other. P.S. Keep those ideas coming. Thnaks, Roland S/V Fraulein II
