Hiee all,

Just some new photos of the work I've done today. I've been down the last 3 weeks when I realized I would not get to sail her this year and haven't done anything till today. I still have to install the vent line from the msd as well as the discharge line and fittings for overboard discharge of the msd as well. Tomorrow I will finish off wiring the one remaining cabin light as well as the bilge pump and float swith and the mercerator pump. Then it will be time to wire up the panel.

Happy sailing,
Brina

(edit)
Oh yeah I changed the mast step from the foot type over to a pivot type as I think it'll be much easier to raise the mast this way.

Nice work. Just remember some of the best sailing weather is in the fall. I just launched yesterday after 10 weeks of refitting our Hunter 23.

Brinna,

Get the stuff done that HAS to be done and let the rest go until snow flies, which for you should be any week now! You can sail without power. I've used ad LED puck light in a Walmart bag as an anchor light. Don't sail in the dark and if you do, there are tri-colored glow sticks that you can dangle over the sides in an emergency.

So, no more excuses!!!!!! Get out there, young man! (waggling index finger inferred)

Hiee Joe,

Thanx for the encouragement :). After having a look at the work you have done to your boat I think it is I who could learn a thing or two :).

Hiee Don,

Its not the boat being ready for the water lol as my van has some issues with body work before I can get it inspected for the road lol and my car simply will not tow the boat :(. I toyed with the idea of maybe trying to moor it someplace for the remainder of the season but that is out of the question too :(. So for now I'll have to content myself with finishing off the odds and ends of the work done this year. The rest of the time I will dream of sailing her down to the Caribbean and poking around down there perhaps next winter. I'm a she by the way :).

Closer and closer Brina!

Hiee Merlinuxo,

Its getting there slowly but surely. Just finishing off the panel wiring today. Now have all of the removed lead ballast back in place ie the rectangular pucks in the bottom of the hull. The lead plus the steel keel box under her adds up to about 700 to 750 lbs and then the keel itself which I figure is probably around 500 lbs. Sure seems like alot of weight for such a small sail area.
This week somtime I will step the mast again. The fore and aft stays I think will be alright but the shrouds may still be to long.

Out of curiosity is there any particular height one might consider for a transom transverse mounted solar panel? Its a big one although lately I've been thinking that maybe 2 smaller ones side by side might be a better idea.

Hey nice work. I just keep trying to get something done and sometimes it finally is done....at least until you decide what comes next ;).

On the solar panels do you board the boat from the stern with a ladder there now or in the future? We started with a 40 watt....

...mounted lower on the stern but wanted more panels and since we board at the stern I tried to get our panels....

http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/macgregor2/outside-33.html

... high enough so that we could board easily. I'm 6-1 and Ruth is 5-2, so of course she has....

...the advantage :).

One other thing to think about is do they hang over the sides. Before this last year we had only sailed on mountain lakes in the west and they don't have pilings sticking up on these lakes. I made the mistake of not worrying if the panels overhung, mainly keeping them withing the legal trailering widths.

Well in Florida this gave us some grief at fueling docks and the such. We anchor out at night but did have to go in every so often for supplies and hit them and the outboard BBQ on them and eventually broke a panel at Marco Island.

Right now, should be out there right now, I'm remounting the panels so that they don't overhang as much, but they still will a little. We are getting better at getting in and out without damage though.

So I'd think about a height that is good for boarding and using the boat and try and keep them within the rub rail of the boat. Our boat doesn't look as nice with the panels but we would never give them up as they make long cruises with a frig and such practical for us.

Good luck,

Hi Brina,
Sounds like shes coming along nicely!
Sum and others here know a lot more about mounting panels than I do (all I have is a little battery minder from WM but intend to improve this). There is another thread on mounting panels (I think on a Venture 222?) and one of the posters mentioned incorporating panels into a bimini or mounting on a bimini frame. I think this is a very cool idea for smaller boats like ours as the panels could serve as shelter and have a good place to live.
Maybe a panel mounted in line with the hull on each side and a canvas piece in between that could be removed to see the main or have a window sewn in? Canvas also on the sides for shade? Could be on 2 bows with a lateral support on each side and when the support is removed the whole assemble could fold forward.
