Yes, It's Mike - again.
This time asking for general impressions on the Com-Pac Cats.
Beautiful boats with some good cabin room. They see particularly easy to set up.
But how do they sail? Is the Cat limited in its ability compared to a similar sized Sloop.
Fun enough?
Here is a review of the Sun Cat with pictures; http://www.compacsuncat.com/

Here a beautiful older Sun Cat for sale: http://www.sailboatlistings.com/view/35326

I know nothing about the Cat Boats but I can see they are roomy and beautiful.
Any comments appreciated!
Thanks,

Mike

Classic lines

Last Sunday, Middle River, Baltimore at the Maryland Marina I saw a Com Pac 16 that looked in real nice shape for $2200.00.

Heavy built boat, I don’t think you could go wrong with that boat. They have the classic lines of a boat that makes them one of the prettiest at any marina. A friend bought a new 25 foot Com Pac about 5 years ago, again new and pretty with all the old classic lines and built like a tank.

just going from what I've heard others say.

The cat boat is easier to rig, and to sail, especially single handed. You will give up some pointing ability but every choice is a trade-off. If you are going to race, you might care about pointing but ... if not ...

With a cat is it hard to get it to come about in some situations with out the head sail?

Our Mac points very well but if we are sailing on the main only it can be hard to come about without the jib or genoa to pull it around.

Thanks,

Sum

I do not believe tacking a cat boat to be that hard. Of course I have watched some people who have trouble tacking a sunfish.

One trick is to sheet the main in a much as possible as you start the tack. That will help the boat to turn into the wind. This worked very well on the Hobie 16 when sailing wthout a jib. The other trick is to start the turn gradually and not to jam the helm over and turn the rudder into a big brake.

I have a friend in Doylestown, PA who will be selling a 2 or 3 year old Suncat that's only seen freshwater. Let me know if you're interested...
