Never have really figured batteries out, some batteries I've maintained to the letter, keeping them in heated areas during the winter, maintenance charges etc, pretty much follow all the advice to obtain long battery life, and had them die after a couple years.
Others I've done the absolute WRONG thing to, and had great life out of them.
The battery in my motorcycle is NOT maintained correctly at all, evrey fall when it gets too cold to ride, I pull the bike into the garage, drain the fuel, throw some heavy 2 stroke mix in the tank, then fire up the bike untill it starts to smoke from the mix, shut it of and drain the carbs then forget about it till it's warm enough to ride.
In spring the battery is always bone dead, so I throw the charger on it, fill the tank with fresh fuel and ride spring summer and fall.
Absolutely the wrong way to maintain a battery, but this battery is on it's 9th year.
Another battery I pulled out because it was too small for the truck, sat it beside the garage door and forgot about it for three years. A friend was going to throw his battery on the charger and while removing it pulled the post out of it. I dug up the 'junk' battery threw it in and told him we'd jump start his truck and I'd follow him home, he ended up using that battery for two years until he sold the truck.
Figured after three years of sitting outside, it was scrap lead in a plastic box, but it never left him stranded.
