I am looking and replacing my outboard(15 hp) and am debating between a 15 horse power 20 inch shaft or a 9.8 horse power 25 inch shaft.

Its for a 1978 Hunter 25

On are current 15 hp when lake mich gets choppy the prop comes out of the water and races.

Not sure if trading the hp for prop depth is worth it.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

You will also have replace the motor mount as 4 cycle motors weigh about twice the weight of a 2 cycle engines.

We had a 6 hp pushing a full keel Endevor 26 on Lake Michigan without a problem. You might read Christopher Duncan's review of the Hunter 25 in the boat information section. He ran a 7.5 hp. Keeping the prop in the water is key as you already know.

I recomend you stick to the 2 cycle engine and get a johnson sailmaster or evenrude yatchtwin 9.9 which will have the 25 inch shaft. The weight will be 78 lbs without electric start of 88lbs with electric start. Original mount should do the job. Ebay or Craigs list best way to find one.
