Hello All,

Hope everyone is having a great 2013 season. My question is simple. I have just purchased a 1991 Hunter 42 passage that should be trucked home by early next week. My question is, does anyone know how the interior walls were finished.... Raw teak, stained and OILED ...OR.... was it stained and VARNISHED?

I have several surfaces that are worn and need refinished and I am working through the simplest approach to get a "Like New" result.

Many of you may have seen the 34 that I totally refit and restored...BUT... while I am looking to restore this one to like new, I really do not have the desire to sand down the entire interior of the boat, if it is avoidable.

Wood cleaning, touch up stain, and re-OILING is my preferred approach, but only if oil was the original top coat.

Thank you in advance for any and all help....

Brian

Teak

I am pretty sure Hunter used real teak back than and when I had my 2001 Hunter it was mostly real teak and very soft wood sole and just used Sea Fin oil which Hunter still gave me on my 07 H-36 which was one of the last teak boats before change to cherry.
I used the sea fin oil given me by Hunter and also used some other teak oil which can't seem to remember what name but any way I did use this marine teak oil stain in a pint can to use in the head teak which seem to not weather as good as the rest of the boat any way it did a good job bringing the teak back to looking good again and also used it in other area's too.
Some one suggested using liquid gold cleaner polish in a spray can,my H-36 has lots of laminate on the walls and after using liguid gold on the wood in my motor home this year and other years thinking of using it on the boat when I get back to Florida.
I have also used stain to help bring back some wood too,so what ever works best use it and I have never done any sanding on the boat or motor home.

Phil & Nick,

Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking to hear. I really appreciate it. Also, Phil, I did see your post last night about all the docs you got from Eddie Breedan at Hunter for the various models. Unfortunately, the P42 didn't have anything more than the sales "Brochure" available. Do you by chance have any ideas where I could get some of the schematics and such for that particular model? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Guys,
Brian

Brian, it seems that the P42 is about the only one missing from the comprehensive list of available documents!

Brian,
1) the wood on my H42 came up amazingly well. I washed it first with a teak cleaner, let it dry well , and then added a teak oil ( unfortunately we cant buy Sea Fin oil in Australia) - I applied it with a fine sponge and wiped off excess after about 20 minutes- then buffed it the next day with a lint-less cotton cloth- it has come up looking like a million bucks!
2) I am happy to copy the op manual for you if you wish and mail it- let me know.

If anyone has a digitized manual for the 42, please upload it to Boat Info -> Hunter 42 -> Downloads. Thanks!

Eian, I was in Maryland this week taking the rig down so she can be shipped to Ohio and I DID find the entire manual as supplied by Hunter ... YAY! Appears to be everything....

Eian & Nick, I also purchased my teak cleaner and Sea Fin oil... If all goes well, she will get here this coming Wednesday.

Picflight... I will do before and afters like I did with my Hunter 34. The wood needs quite a bit of attention to bring her back to like new condition, but I feel fairly confident.

We brought the cushion covers home and are dealing with small mold/mildew marks on the new (2012) microfiber upholstery.

I will shoot a few before pics this week when she gets here... Thanks for all the help guys... it is very appreciated...

Great news for you! My wife striped our upholstery and soaked the covers and foams in the bath tub for days in nappy ( dipper) soaker- then hand washed both lots twice- by hand in the bath tub with a very mild "woolens " soap. Had to leave the foams for a few weeks to dry properly. The canvas guy replaced a few zip pulls and repaired a small tear- they truly look like new! A lot of work, but very well worth it- Hunter clearly used great quality materials back then!
Good luck!
