I just noticed (after a good hard but short sail) that my forestay where it exits the top of the foil on the furler (Hood 705 line drive) is massively frayed. It looks like half of the strands are broken and what's left is unraveled. Also, the line drive furler which is in the anchor locker and totally unaccessable, is a pain in the butt to use as the line slips off of it and you need to use two hands when reefing or furling so as to keep tension on it so it doesn't slip so I'm thinking of replacing it also. I probably replace all of the standing also since it's 15ys old. A rigger said it would be 3000 for the whole job if he does it or if I do it the wires and swages would be about 1000. Any ideas?

Interesting post, If it was my boat, I'd do it myself. I'm about as cheap as they come, and can fix almost anything. With all of the swageless fittings on the market it can't be that hard to do. Even if you purchase the tools for swaging (sp) you would still be ahead. The only good thing about having a rigger do the work is that if they screw it up they're liable for the dammage. If you screw it up you're shit out of luck. If you know someone who has done this before, talk to them and find out how hard it really is. I watched a rigger shorten my forestay on my second boat, and it was simple. It took him all of two minutes. Granted, it was a 19 ft boat with much smaller rigging than yours but it all seems pretty much the same. Boat US and Waste Marine have capabilities of doing rigging if you have the old rigging they might be able to help. Hope this helps.

I have a '89 30 and lost the rig due to a cotter pin failure at the top of the mast. had to replace the furling gear. You should be able to have the mast dropped, take the old wire to your local marine shop and have them make you an identical new one and install it yourself and then have the mast raised. Follow the directions in our instruction book and do the tuning yourself. Work in the locker is blind and a pain, just needs patience. Not sure what your other problem is.
