I am about to spend some money on a new outboard for my 1974 Catalina 27'. The out board will be installed in the well. I need some advice that only an owner of such a vessel can give. What outboard models fit in the well without cutting up the boat. I am looking at the Yamaha 9.9 long shaft. But would consider a Johnson 9.9 Sailmaster or other brand. These would all be two strokes because obviously the four strokes are huge. Any recomendations would be helpful. Thanks, Joe Passanisi

4 strokes

I just bought a 4-stroke Honda for my '73 C27 and it fits perfectly. We mounted it directly on the transom instead of the attached outboard mount. It was a *little* heavy but fits perfectly! What I especially love about it is the cockpit controls. My previous motor didn't have 'em and I had to crawl into the engine well to shift gears or speed up, etc. I'm no engine expert but from what folks have told me, stick with Yamaha or Honda. Honda has been making 4 strokes longer than anyone else so they're pretty reliable. Good luck! LaDonna

Johnson works

First of all let me say that LaDonna is almost always right in her advice. I decided on a Johnson for my 1978 C27. I had to make a 1" lower transom modification, but it cleared without much work. I wasn't too woried about 2 v. 4 stroke so the Johnson worked for me. And I actually jumped up to the 15hp. The price difference was nominal and I was hoping the extra hp would help with reverse thrust. It didn't. I also had the remote controls installed that LaDonna raves about, and outside of some rather inconvenient controls in the cockpit, I will never dive into the engine compartment again to adjust the throttle or change direction. And the shop that I bought the engine from recommends installing a recessed key start for the remote controls. It makes a ton of sense. It takes the key out of harms way while the engine is on at the expense of about 4 inches of port side locker compartments space. Chris D Toy Box #3636 Eastport, MD

inexpensive remote for 9.9 high thrust

for those with a 9.9 yamaha high thrust, there is a less expensive alternative for the remote. yamaha makes 6 foot extension cables that allows you to take the throttle and shift controls off the tiller handle and put them in the cockpit.

FYI Johnson 15HP

I believe the 2 stroke Johnson (& Evinrude) 15 HP engines are the same size as the 10 HP. The difference is the 15 uses a tuned exhaust port.

Outboards

We used the Honda 9.9XL shaft on a '74 C27. The extra long shaft was a mistake and I'm sure the long shaft would have worked well. We didn't cut the transom, but checking the oil can be a pain. Also, the 9.9 and 15 Honda were, at that time, the same engine, the 9.9 has a throttle stop, but even without the throttle stop it's still a 9.9 to the insurance company. 10hp and above was a different rate. The friend I sold the boat to motored it approximately 40 nat. miles on just over three gallons of gas last weekend.

FYI again

The 10 and the 15 are the same block. I know there is a subtle difference, but I dont what the real advantage is but for $150, the thought of up to 50% less wear and tear was appealing.
