I'm thinking of replacing my 22 yr old Evinrude 4.5hp 2 stroke with something a bit more powerful. A reasonably priced option that has recently become available is an unused 2001 model electric start Evinrude 9.9 4 stroke. Obviously this is heavier than my current motor. Does anyone have a view on whether the additional weight is too much of a negative to consider this further? I'll be using the motor for more than just getting in and out of the marina and I don't race (well, not in my C-22). And by the way - you don't see many C-22 in Norway!!

Buy it!

That's a great motor for your boat, if it'll fit! My only concern is if the motor mount would hold it - you might have to upgrade the mount if it's old. If you're not a racer, then the added weight won't make a noticable difference. LaDonna

Over kill..

It may be more than you really need and you may not get any more real speed out of it than you would with say a 6HP given the hull speed of your boat.. And La Donna is right about the weight, it may be too much for the current bracket on your boat. I would look for a Merc 6hp if you wanted to up grade..

Go For it

I used to have a 9.9 Johnson on my c22...till someone needed it more than me. It was a great motor and never had a problem punching thru a sea. You need to look at the motor mount though. With the extra weight of the motor.. the mount may be a bit shy. Might be worth spending a few bucks to get a heavy duty model with multiple springs (4-5 or more) to help get the motor out of the water when sailing or docked. OUtboard motor size

I just moved up from an Evinrude 3hp to a Chrysler 9.9 electric start and it was really the right thing to do. The extra hp really helps when bucking the wind headed in and the electric start is wonderful. I found the Chrysler at a bargain on EBAY is the reason that I bought it.
