Does anyone know if the fixed motor mount on a 23 will support the weight of a 97 # 4 stroke Yamaha 9.9? I just picked up an electric start model and am wondering, Hmmmm, wouldn't elec start be nice.

I have a roughly 80 lb Honda 8, no electric start, and it is OK on my 23. I would probably go with a 6 if I were buying a new one, as it is a bit heavy. If you do go for the 9.9 I would verify the backing plate arrangements very carefully and get as much surface area back there as feasible.

Can't answer your question but I'm happy with my 2000 Johnson 6 HP. It's heavier than I like to lift and pushes my H23 quite nicely.

9.9 on smith mt. Lake is overkill my friend. I started my business at SML years ago and a 6 or 8 would be good but 9.9 I would tend to question. I suspect that the 23 came from me originally. Look on the back for a sticker to see if it is from American marine & Sail Supply, Inc.

if the original outboard motor bracket, then that engine is too heavy for it for any length of time and will require upgrades to make the bracket stronger and you will need to distribute the weight on the inside of the stern locker or transom wall with a new backing plate to distribute the weight.

CD, I agree it's overkill, I just picked it up for nothing, it runs great & is electric start, etc. The mount is the original, and I'm sure you were the dealer. If I use it on the 23, I'll install a new bracket and back the crap out of it.

I figured you were the same Dave Condon I remembered from SML. Ed Waters & I reminisced about you last week.

Hope you are doing well.

My 23 had a mercuy 2-stroke 9.9, it was overkill but it came with the boat. This is what I ended up doing before I was happy.

Afterwords, it was great while the boat's on the trailer. With the strong mount lowered all the way, it was my "Extra step" to climb onto the boat

I had a 9.9 yamaha 4 stroke on my H23 with a garelick mount that is rated for 120lbs and it worked well. That motor weighs 110lbs and is a royal pain to take off by yourself. I have since beefed up the inside of the transom where the motor mount attaches. I also went back to the evinrude 8.0 two stroke because of the weight. It's easier to deal with. The 9.9 was the high thrust version and it definetly pulled better although the top end was only .5 -1.0 mph better.

A friend of mine put a Honda 9.9 on his H23 because the dealer sold it to him at the same cost of a Honda 8. The boat lists to the port side due to the weight of the motor and he had to replace the motor mount also because of the weight. Crazy Dave is right... overkill.

I had a 5 HP Honda on my original mount. I did not like the look of my mount with cracks so I put a new Garelick mount on. If you go the route, make sure you get the correct mount. Some of them are not big enough to handle a 9.9. Saying that I bought one that I sent back because it was to big for the 5.5 and the spring was so tight that I could not get the motor in the water. It probably would be fine for the 9.9

Tgardner;

Tell Ed Waters I said hello to the two of you. I just finished clearing for a 1000 foot driveway to a new home near Iron Gate if you know where that is. By the way, Barny Fife is well and alive with the camera in that community. I overlook the beginning of the James River. Maybe we need to communicate later when the house is built this winter. I miss the old gang but not the build up at the lake. If you see Tom Hardy, tell him I said hello.

The more weight you put behind the CG. the lower the transom sits in the water. If speed under sail is important to you, keep the transom above water. Every bubble and swirl of wake is the result of energy robbing friction. The water wrapping around the transom creates a vacuum that slows the boat.

Ed splits his time between here, Myrtle and the Keys. I still thrive here after 27 years on the lake. I keep the 23 at VISA. I know there's not much sailing on the James at Iron Gate, so make the long haul down here an go sailing this fall ( the touroids have left for the winter).

I have decided to leave the Tohatsu 5HP on the boat.

Tgardner;

email me via this web forum with phone number. I need to get back on SML. I was at VISA earlier this year looking for what I call my "little brother ", Tom Hardy. I can still remember the day during the winter many moons ago when located on Rt. 122 working on a Beneteau 28 at 5:30 am Tom was the master of that operation. I never have seen anyone take a drill and drill thru the deck and cut the wire completely in half on the wheel steering cable. He left mad at himself and I had a spare. I got that on fixed when he arrived at his regular job. I still laugh about that today.
