I have a 1988 Hunter 28.5 where the rudder is dripping water, not real fast, but there always seems to be water on the bottom of the rudder.
It has been leaking for several years, when pulled out and put on the hard. (Gets pulled out every fall here in Minnesota before we get the hard crust on the water.)
Is this something that I really need to be concerned about?
Anybody know what the internal construction of the rudder is on a Hunter of this erra?
I had scrapped & sanded the whole bottom and resealed the rudder edges and any cracks (epoxy) along with the whole bottom last year. Three coats of 2000E epoxy primer and 2 coats of Interlux Micron CMC.
I tried to put some more Micron CMC on the bottom edge today, but it continues to leak (apparently pushing the paint out of the way as it drips...)
Not sure if it's leaking in from the top when in the water, or seeping up from a crack in the bottom of the rudder (where it's leaking out). The rudder post seems pretty tight.
I've been trying to study on the subject (searched the forums) and I may drill a hole at the bottom of the rudder and possibly try to put a vacuum to the hole to pull as much water out as I can, and then seal it next week, before the boat goes in the water.
I'm thinking that it may not be worth worrying about...
