86 Legend backstay problem

Last year we got some pretty heavy air (60 kts +) and when we got back to port we noticed that the starboard U bolt that the backstay is attached to had pulled the fiberglass away from the hull and had factured the gel coat around it. Has anyone had a similar incident and how did you fix it? The attachment of both the deck and of the U bolt seam very weak to me and in need of brace, apart from the fix I'll need to perform! Any help in this area would be appreciated. Scrimshaw.

Back stays

I think there has been some articles about this. I checked mine when I bought the boat this spring. They reinforced mine and put bigger U bolts in place. Looks like it was done at the factory.

backstay support

Last year Mr. Cohen a H45 owner posted a note about this. I check Fairwind and found that my boat (a 1988 model) did have the area reinforce with plastic wedges. I am planning of adding more support for my peace of mind.

Backstay - '86 Legend

My Legend 45 (1986) has not shown signs of a problem yet but I have been nervous for some time. I will probably reinforce the area and install longer U-bolts.
