I just bought an '86 28.5 and now noticed stress cracks and spider cracks on the hull. I did not pay much for the boat, about $5K, but was wondering whether or not to address these cracks in the gel coat before I put the boat in the water. I had the boat surveyed and the surveyor told me that they are just cosmetic and not to worry about them. Does anyone have any advice? Also, are these stress cracks in the hull common? Thank you!

Pictures speak a thousand words! My feeling is the hull is sound and the cracks are cosmetic as stated by the surveyor but that is said without seeing pics. It would depend on the formation of the cracks...are they from an impact or sling or age???

I will get pictures and post them, but I believe that the stress cracks may be from impact since this boat has been docked during a hurricane many years ago. However, the surveyor did do a moisture reading and the hulls as well as the deck read dry. Should I take some pictures and post them by next week?

I would believe the surveyor. He has taken the readings. This is not uncommon to have these. If you want to fix them you should look up gel-coat repairs and see what is involved. It is very tedious but can be done.

It is good that no elevated levels of moisture exist. But, if you wanted to apply an epoxy water barrier coat, now is the time to do so. That would help prevent any water intrusion in the futre.
