'85-89 Cal 28-2 and 33, how many of us are there?

I'm trying to pull this topic out of Smitty's post about leaking dorade boxes. I've been wondering how many 28-2's Lear/Siegler/Starcraft/Pearson produced (in Fall River, Massachusetts) from '85-'89, when Cal and O'Day went bankrupt and were bought by Pearson at auction (September '89). I've got a 1987, hull #91 (CABD0091I687), the highest hull number that carries Coast Guard documentation (something the manufacturer/seller was probably doing for buyers and then stopped at the end of that model year.) Gary S. from Tennessee has hull #130, the number I guessed would be how many were made. Larry from Maryland has hull #134, CABL0134K788 (so you can see how the numbers work: CABxHULLxxYR). So the question is, how many of us are there? This topic would be a good place for people to post their hull numbers (and pictures, anecdotes, etc.)--it would be as interesting to know who has the low numbers (anybody still sailing #1-#10?) as well as who has the highest, and whether anyone knows about destroyed hulls. If you're nervous about posting the whole number (I can't think how someone might misuse use that, but the nuts are out there) just give us the hull number and year. And I really don't know for certain whether the manufacturer's number interfiles Cal 33-2's with the 28-2's, so if you have a 33-2 pipe right in. My current guess is 145 28-2's made, perhaps 10 destroyed, and maybe 25 33-2's made with maybe 1 destroyed. Here's a chance to build a registry for our "California's" made in Massachusetts...

I have a Cal 28, 1987, Hull number 87. I'm just outside of Annapolis, Md. Is there a difference between the Cal 28 and the Cal 28-2? If so, what is it? Steph

Hunt vs Lapworth

Steph, The original Cal 28 refers to a Bill Lapworth "flat-top" design built in the 60's. There is a link below to a more detailed description. In the mid 1980's C.R. Hunt and Associates designed a completely different 28 footer we usually refer to the 28-2 and which is the subject of this thread. Larry

I have hull #100, made in 1987. It is my understanding that about 140 were made before Lear Siegler went out of business. There are at least 2 other 28's in the Narragansett Bay area. I've seen a few more in my travels. I've had her for 11 years. It is a great boat. Mike

Looks like we're all in this together?!

Interesting! Is it possible that as many as 153 33-2's were made, or is it the case that the 28-2 and 33-2's were drawing serial numbers from the same pool? I'm supposing it's the latter, But we'll see. I think I read that the 33 was the first Lear-Siegler model and that the very last Lear-Siegler hull sold unfinished in the bankruptcy auction was also a 33, so maybe you guys have the highest and lowest numbers?

Double vision

I missed the 2 posts below showing Bill's hull #133 for a 28-2 and Ron's hull #133 for a 33-2, so it would appear that there were vastly more 33's made than I had thought and the 2 series are numbering separately. Keep those numbers coming, sailors!

1987 Cal 28-2

Just found this forum. I am glad to know there are other Cal 28-2's out there. I have a 1987 hull #119, manufactured in June, 87. I bought from the original owner and am fortunate to have all documentation for the boat, electronics, engine, etc. This is my fourth sailboat and by far the most enjoyable one I have owned.

Glad to have a forum with other Cal owners. I have a question for everyone: in the cockpit locker of my 28-2 there is a pump for the manual head flush, a fuel filter(?) connected to fuel lines, and a old rusted Jabsco electric bilge pump. My primary bilge pump is a small unit in the bilge itself. As far as I know the Jabsco hasn't worked for years and I'm not even sure that's been its real function. Can anyone unlock this mystery? What the heck is this thing?

Jabsco pump

The Jabsco pump may be the shower pump. That is where my shower pump is. George

gelcoat chipping

I wouldn't trade my Cal 28-2 for any comparable boat, but I do have a lot of gelcoat chipping in the cockpit and in the companionway. Anyone else have this problem? Did you get a professional to fix it?

pumps and gelcoat

It's interesting how this string has become a magnet for everyone doing keyword searches for Cal 28-2 and 33-2 out on the web; must be all the right keywords in one place! Newbies, don't forget you can start new strings on any subject so the current topic doesn't get lost. Welcome aboard! I'll make a quick answer on the pump: New owners of the 28's were apparently given their choice of a holding tank pump (located in the cockpit locker) or a shower pump (but not a sump, because there wasn't enough room in the bilge or liner: you had to turn the pump on while showering and off when you were done) under the head cabinet (I think: someone who has one check me on that). Gelcoat cracking is too big a topic to tackle here except to say the only affordable solution is to live with it and keep an eye on the cracks over the balsa cored areas.

Great Boat! I think of it as an O'Day product since it was built in the same factory and designed by the same people as the "newer" O'Days. She's 20 years old now and still in excellent shape. I think my wife likes this boat as much as I do. No complaints when I spend money on it and I've spent a lot.
