'84 H31 holding tank

I've come to the conclusion that the head smell in my boat is the result of a leaking seal on the holding tank cover. I removed the cover to replace the seal and discovered that the tank has been lined using something that looks like varnish. The "varnish" was cracked and peeling in some place so I removed all of it using a heatgun (not as fun as it sounds). I emailed Hunter asking if the varnish was from the original build and got this answer:

The original lid had Formica on the underside and was installed with 3M-5200. It would be best to seal it with something that can withstand a lot of dampness.

There's no Formica anywhere in the V-berth, so I don't think that answer is of much value.

Also, 5200 will make the plate almost impossible to remove in the future. What should I use that will provide a reliable seal long-term, but will still allow the plate to be removed if necessary?

The folks at WM recommended that I use TRAVACO Gluvit Epoxy Waterproof Sealer to line the tank. Has anyone made this particular repair? Is this product recommended for this purpose? Is there something else that I should use instead?

Thanks.

I am guessing that it was 5200 that was used. The varnish color was probably created from the "waste" in the tank.

After all this seal only lasted for 30 years! You may also want to consider glassing the lid in place with an access port for future access.

We did glass the lid on our H'31 because of the leaking issue. Another option would be to remove the lid, cut out the tank and mount a new tank under the vberth.

From the very fountain of stupid questions comes yet another: How do you access the "lid" of the waste tank on the H31? I see lots of screws on the outside of the V-berth but the glass on which the cushions sit looks solid to me. Does removing the screws just allow the tank to drop into the space underneath the berth?
