Recently purchased 84 25.5 Hunter - NEED HELP!!!

Hello to everyone on this site!

I recently purchased an 84 Hunter 25.5, her name is Eva II. I am new to the whole boating life, and there is a lot I need to learn. I have been researching about the components on this boat, and the only manual I was able to find through this forum doesn't really tell me much.

One of the biggest issues I am having is with the Bilge Pump! It has an electric pump and the hose goes towards the back and goes into the floor. When I pump the bilge which is full most of the time, it empties out, but when it stops it all flows back into the bilge. I cannot find where the drain is, and I am hoping that the drain is not under the boat and clogged by barnacles. I am including a picture of the bilge with the hose visible below. If anyone has experience with this type of setup on this model boat I would really appreciate your advise.

I am adding other posts for other components which I don't fully understand.

Thank you...

Hello to everyone on this site!

I recently purchased an 84 Hunter 25.5, her name is Eva II. I am new to the whole boating life, and there is a lot I need to learn. I have been researching about the components on this boat, and the only manual I was able to find through this forum doesn't really tell me much.

I posted another thread about the bilge flowing back after running the electric pump. I wonder if any of these systems are related. I am including pictures of the valves in the V-berth which I don't know what they do...

The first picture shows a red valve, a yellow valve on the left, and a hand pump lever which is partially visible on top.

The second picture shows the hoses, which one goes from the toilet, but the other one comes from that red valve. I understand that these are the black water hoses. The hose with the yellow lever goes into the wall, and the drain is visible on the last picture. In addition, there is an electric pump there, which doesn't seem to be functional, but I have no clue what it is for.

I have also added a picture of the toilet so you can see what type of system it is.

The other big question here is, is that hose with the yellow valve associated in any way with the bilge ? Is it possible that the bilge drains to a holding tank, which in turn gets pumped by the handle on top ?

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you...

Hunter 25.5 Bilge Pump Installation

I have Hunter 25.5 as well. I removed all of the furniture, the bulkheads and the cabin sole out ... so that I could refinish and/or replace as required. Attached are some photos of the empty boat. These photos may help you understand what is behind the furniture and underneath the cabin sole.

As for your bilge pump question: As far as I know a bilge pump was not standard equipment on a 25.5 ... nor was it a factory option. Thus, on a Hunter 25.5 every bilge pump installation is a bit difference. The only constant is that most (if not all) bilge pumps on 25.5s end up being installed in the sump in the middle of the bilge. Where the discharge is routed is a different story.

From the photo it looks like the discharge hose from your bilge pump is routed internal to the rib immediately aft of the sump ... perhaps up (and out) the starboard side. Which is actually pretty clever. But, the question remains: Where is the discharge?

I cannot believe anyone being dumb enough to put it below the waterline, but I suppose anything is possible. From the one photo I'd expect to find it high on the starboard side, in line with the rib that you see the hose entering in the bilge.

If it's not obvious on the starboard side, see if you can see the hose exiting the aft side of that rib ... which would mean the discharge will be further aft. A proper installation would be to route it all the way to the transom. Have you looked there? If it's not there (high on the transom), then perhaps a brain dead PO connected it to a "T" (above the seacock) in the drain hose from the galley sink.

This unfortunate arrangement might explain your symptoms: If the bilge pump is connected to the galley sink drain ... and if the seacock on the drain is closed ... then when you turn on the bilge pump it will fill up the drain hose connected to the galley sink ... and when the pump is turned off the bilge water would then flow back into the bilge.

I'll be interested in hearing what you discover.

Regards,

E. Godsey

Re: '84 25.5 Hunter... can someone help me with information.

Hello E. Godsey,

Your information is very helpful, I won't be able to make it to the boat until this coming weekend, but with this information I have a better perspective of what to look for. I have one question. What is the hole in the very front of the v-berth? Does that go into the sump? I didn't realize there was a sump on the boat until you mentioned it...Goes to show how much I know about boats..LOL! And then this leads to another question... Does the "Black Water" valve on the outside of the boat drain out the sump as well as the toilet holding tank ? I assume that the seacock is to select the flow of either the toilet holding tank and the sump? And the Manual pump is to pump out the sump by hand ?

Thank you very much for your help.

Re: '84 25.5 Hunter... can someone help me with information.

In addition,

To answer your questions... I have checked for thru valves in the transom and on both sides of the boat, and the only thru holes in the transom are to drain the cockpit deck. The only other thru valve I have seen is on the starboard side on the oposite side of the sink to evacuate the sink, and it doesn't have any connections leading to it, so I am assuming that the bilge probably drains into the sump and there is a seacock somewhere that I haven't looked for, but I will confirm it this coming weekend.

Once again I thank you for your help with this, and look forward to your response.

Thanks,

Nelson
