My 'new to me' '82 H30 has two batteries located under the port side quarter berth just aft of the chart table.

The wiring diagram in the original owners manual shows the batteries located aft of the Yanmar under the cockpit sole....

Did Hunter not update the owners manual or did previous owner re-locate the batts?

Where are your batteries located?

Is the battery location under the quarter berth ABCY / USCG approved?

I'm replacing the old NewMar battery charger and I want to get the batteries located correctly before installing the new charger.

Thanks

batteries

My 78 has them located under the cockpit sole between the yanmar and the fuel tank im assuming this is the original location because nothing else on this boat has been updated from 1978,however when I bought my volvo im installing I got a 4 year old stainless steel fuel tank that is roughly three times the size of the original hunter tank but it will fit (just)on that plywood shelf the previous tank and batteries were on so I was planning om relocating the batteries to under the settee forward of the galley seeing as how the fresh water tank is on the opposite side forward of the nav table.I dont think its an issue where they are installed so long as they are secure and can breathe.Be anxious to read some replies as to rather people prefer the batteries center of the boat port or starboard.

I have the same original battery set up as Digby, under the cockpit. But, before you move the batts, check the internet for specs on how far away from the starter, main switch you can run wire before a problem develops. Seems like I read something problematic somewhere. Also consider weight and balance with a shift of 130 lbs from aft center line to stardboard midships, it might change your trim.

I think you may be correct, the batteries were relocated for early 80s models and the manuals were never updated. After 25 years I would say there will not be a problem with ABYC or USCG regulations. Some newer Hunters have batteries under the port settee inside the cabin.

Mine are under the aft berth on my 83 H30. I'd really like to move them in front of the fuel tank when I buy new ones. I think that they would be better if centered in the boat. I can't see that there would be a big difference if moved aft 2 more feet., and centering them has to be better. By the way, I have 4-6 volt golf cart batteries in mine.

Lazarette

Our 1980 H30 had the batteries moved to under the starboard cockpit lazarette.

I can get to them easily for topping up. Also in there is the condenser and heat sink for the refrigeration.

We run about 450 amp-hours currently.

Charger and inverter mounted on the side under the quarter birth - easy access to the main wiring harnesses under the Q-berth.

In my '82 H30, the batteries are under the port quarter berth. Also, the water tank is under the starboard sitee rather than the port sitee as shown in the manual. I have observed that when the tank is full, the boat lists very slightly to starboard - maybe just under an inch at the waterline midship. I think it might be slightly worse if the batteries were not to port. I would not move them to the center. In fact I actually looked for a way to shift them farther to port, but concluded that the nice flat fiberglass platform under the quarter berth is probably the most secure place for them.
