Has anyone had experience in switching out original 22 gal. fuel tank on a hunter 33'? It appears too large to remove in one piece. SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME I'M WRONG! Any help is appreciated.

Port side take out?

To gain better access to the engine/transmission and drive shaft I have made a small cut in the portside panel. This allows easy removal of the panel. The fiberglass shell flange may have to be cut to remove the fuel tank. You can look at the other side but the portside is likely easier to work with. The link shows the cut in the panel.

Hunter 33 Fuel Tank

Last month, I removed the old fuel tank from my 1980 Hunter 33. I had to cut about a 1/4 inch off the top of the filler pipe to fit the old tank through the saillocker on the starboard side. I replaced the old tank with a new tank that had a 1 1/2 inch screw in filler tube in the identical location of the old tank. The fabricator used the old tank as a guide to build the new tank.

You are right, too big without cutting filler tube

I replaced mine about 5 years ago. I used a smaller tank, one which was not as tall. It holds about 12 gallons, I know its not much, but I only use 6 gallons a year. The yanmar is very good on fuel. If I ever take her to the coast, I'll install a second tank to increase range or I'll use extra portable tanks. Very pleased with mine, I had to relocate my filler since the tank I ordered had a different location for the filler tube. Custom tanks cost about 3x as much as one that is standard. Just use a hacksaw to cut some of the tube off to fit it through the cockpit locker opening.

thanks for advice

I will check this weekend to see if it will fit out the starboard side locker. The owner before me installed a 30 gal. holding tank. Wish me luck.
