I was getting ready to purchase a 1980 Oday 28. There is a problem where the hull is "caved in" a bit. The dealer claims it is because the halyard was tightened too much and it ultimately connects to ribs which pulled the hull in. The boat is in the water. There is no cracking. Does this sound plausible and does this sound expensive to fix. Thanks in advance. Steve

Not halyard but shroud

meant to write shroud but put halyard instead.

similar problem

I had a similar problem on a 24 ft s2 that I bought in 97. The rig had been overtightened and caused a "oil canning" effect to the hull. On my boat there was only a bulk head on the port side, the starboard side had just a single truss and was pulled toward the center of the boat. When I bought I did a simple jerry-rig anchoring the truss to the starboard bunk/support. I sailed this way for a full season with no problem then had it fixed. the cost was $ 1,000 to rebed and strengthen the truss. The hull indentation stayed after the repair however mostly cosmetic it would have been nice to have that repaired as well. i would get a quote from a yard before purchase and negotiate into the buying price. I would also have a surveyor check the severity and risk of this damage.

O28 Hull Dimple

I have a 1979 O28 which I purchased 2 years ago. I noticed the same thing, pointed it out to the surveyor, who seemed concerned but not alarmed. There was a slightly newer sister ship right nearby and it had the same thing. I think it is a manufacturing oddity because it is right in the area of the forward bulkhead, and it is symmetrical, port and starboard. Whatever it is, it hasn't affected anything over 2 seasons of hard sailing and I personally would not (did not) let that be the deciding factor. This is a great boat, with space, headroom and decent sailing characteristics. Enjoy!

Dimple in her cheeks..

My 28 is a 79 model that I bought 5 years ago. She also has the "dimples" and like others the problem has gotten no worse. I do, however; loosen my shrouds if I'm not going to be sailing hard for a while.

caves

the o 28 may very well cave some especially if someone over tightened the shrouds. I've repaired my boat, it was fairly striaght forward and easy, messy, but easy, e-mail me if you do buy the boat and need /wish to do the repair.
