Ahoy,

I am re-powering my 79 Hunter 30 and plan on leaving the exhaust outlet in its current position. It is on the starboard side just forward of the stern and 7 1/4 inches above the waterline. I'll make sure a proper goose-neck of at least 20 inches at the exhaust hose fitting is achieved. There have been those that say the exhaust has to exit out of the stern but I don't see the dynamic making this necessary. Thoughts?

Thanks,
Bob

I've seen a number of boats with exhausts out the side, out the back back, and in my case, underwater. Wherever, the goose-neck (riser) is a must. Other than a few ounces of extra thrust, I don't think there's any advantage to a rear facing exhaust .

The outlet on my 34 is in almost the same location. The only down side that I know is the bubbling when motoring long distances at cruise speed. The boat squats and the outlet is under water and it bubbles loudly.. not bad for a few minutes but hearing that for a day or more non-stop is a drag. The tall loop inside is necessary as is the small vented loop between the heat exchanger and the mixing elbow.

Our boat is like kloudie's. After many years I finally learned that I can avoid the squat if I ease back on the throttle just a tad. Well, I actually learned this six times! After every haulout and new bottom paint, the boat goes fast(er) with less throttle and less squat. :) As time goes on, to keep the same speed she needs more "gas", or I just slow down. :) I don't mind the burbling, 'cuz I'm rarely behind the wheel except for leaving and returning to the slip, and we have to motor out for 45 minutes to sail. The autopilot is a big help. I am not a slave behind the wheel.
