79 Hunter 30 Battery Location

Ahoy,
Has anyone found a better location for the batteries on 79 vintage Hunter 30. Stock on mine put them just ahead of the 12 gallon aluminium fuel tank on the same platform. I have two group 27's that resided there and as a result of my re-power I would like to locate them elsewhere. It would make sense to keep them as low and as close to midship as possible. Has anyone came up with a clever, functional location given our limited space on our 30's?
Regards,
Bob

The size of the boat is relative as we keep two group 27's under the companionway in a Starwind 223. On an h27 we kept two of them under the port side stern berth. We now have batteries under the port side cabin setae but that entails a longer wire run.

Good question. I have been thinking about this too on my 79 H30. The port side cabin settee on a 30 is where the water tank is so not an option. I will have 2 6v golf cart batteries for house power and one 12v 27 for starting and backup house. I wonder if there is room under the aft quarter berth? It looks like a bunch of unused spaced. Cut a hole and install a removable cover like the water pump access area. I wouldn't want all three batteries plus the water tank on the port side. Maybe install the 2 house batteries in area starboard of the engine (laserette storage) and my starting battery under the quarter berth?

Hey Bob, no room behind the new auxiliary power plant? I've got a 1978 30C. It's definitely tight between my Yanmar and fuel tank. A real hassle to take out and reinstall the batteries for winter storage. I'm using two 27DCM's for my plan. I'm assuming of course that the '78 and '79 designs are similar. Another boat on the hard, right next to me, is a '79 30C which he repowered with a Y14, also ran into a similar battery space problem. On his boat he had a well supported, cam-locked, and sealable access hatch for a cockpit floor. He took it off and showed me direct, top down, access to the fuel tank and batteries. Of course our boats are on fresh water inland lakes and we rarely concern our selves with cockpit flooding. I'm thinking I'd do that in a flash given the time. It would have saved my back from the strain of re-installing the batteries this spring.

Otherwise I'd think the only alternative would be the port quarter berth,as Kito's has pointed out. We currently use that area for secondary sail storage and the grandkids when they're available.

For the '82 H30, Hunter moved the batteries to below the port side quarter berth. The water tank is below the starboard sitee and the water heater is below the cockpit just forward of the fuel tank.

Thanks,
That geometry is quite different from the "79". Looks as if I will be keeping my layout roughly the same as it was prior to the re-power and only make the few tweaks required. Thanks for the description of your "82".
