Howdy folks, new sailor here. Got a great deal on my first boat, but as a new sailor could use some info.

1 There are no labels on the switch panel, can anyone tell me what switch is supposed to do what? I found the switch for the bilge pump and cabin lights, since they all work. No exterior lights seem to work at all.

2 Is the switch on the mast for the anchor light or steaming light? It moves fore and aft rather than up and down, so which way is on?

3 Should the red and green lights have lens covers? I don't see any way to get the bulbs out without removing the entire metal fixtures from each side of the bow.

Thanks very much in advance. This weekend I should be finished scraping, sanding, and painting the bottom(it was in the water for 10 years). Before it goes back in the water I'm going to go through all the lights and fuses with a meter to see if the bulbs are bad or if there's a bigger problem. I have a friend who's going to teach me how to use his bosun's chair to do some of the work. He's also been helping me learn to sail on his Bristol 19.

Should this have gone in the small boat forum instead? I've tried doing searches for this stuff but have found little info so far. Apologies if this is in the wrong forum.

I got the red, green, and stern lights working. One of the switches must be for the anchor light. I thought the final mystery switch might be a master on/off for the panel, but it is not so. It felt very good to finally be done scraping and finally get to work on something else.

Glad to hear you've had success! I don't know what the panel looks like, so couldn't offer any help. I was fortunate that mine was labeled. My mast lights don't work and although I have a bosun's chair, I haven't steeled my nerves sufficiently to try being hoisted up.

Thanks. As soon as I have a chance to get more pictures I'll be sure to get a good one of the panel. I ordered new lenses today. I figure being hoisted up the mast can't be any worse than the rappelling we did in the army or doing bridgework over the highway.

I've climbed 300' antenna towers, so the height isn't really a problem, but I haven't quite sorted the tackle. I don't have a winch for my main halyard, and the jib halyard has a quick release clip that isn't recommended for going aloft - I do have a couple of brothers that could crank me up there, but they live 50 miles away so coordination is problematic too. Just need to figure it out and set a time I guess. I'd like to have the lights working.

I only work 4 days a week so I plan on spending lots of weekends out in the bay. Having the lights work is going to be a must for me. A solar charger is going to be in the works at some point too. My friend who knows what he's doing will be helping me with this, but since it's my boat I want to go up there and poke around instead of having him do it.
