I'm considering a small backup boat. It's a 15' Chrysler with a great mainsail but a wornout jib on a furler. Includes an electric motor and the trailer. They wanted $1400 but are now down to 750. I was thinking of offering 500. Any comments?
I bought my Bandit 15 in 1982 for $1,500. Probably over paid. No trailer, no motor. If you could get it for $750 I think you could resell it. Not sure about $ 1,400. But if it fits your needs I would offer the $750 and see what the counter offer is. I wouldn't quibble too much about the $ 700 dollar difference since you could spend that in an hour refitting the boat.
He has already offered it to me for 750. I'd like to get it lower to cover my travel expense and give me some room to resell it at the end of the summer.
You never know unless you ask. The Catalina I have was over $1,000 higher than what I finally paid and the seller did deliver it over 3 hours and rigged it. There is no reason not to make an offer. If he says no, then it's up to me to agree to his price or walk away.
Change of plans. There was a '72 16' Tanzer for sale about 3 hours away (one way) that the seller wanted $1500 for. I asked him if it was still for sale and he wrote back saying it was and that he needed to sell it because he was moving. We talked about condition etc and I explained that I had a budget to work with that was well below his asking price. I told him I was a buyer at $700. He said that if I was willing to part with my $700, he was willing to part with his boat. I pick it up tomorrow.
