I am in the midst of refurbishing a 1976 Catalina 27...This refurb included rebuilding the A-4...The boat has been out of the water for several months... We are planning on launching the boat in July (hopefully) and understand that we need to let the hull regain her water shape before we connect the engine to the output coupling...This may take a couple of weeks, soooo....we have a 6 hp Johnson long shaft and were wondering if this outboard would be powerful enough to push our 27 (use it as our kicker) while we wait to connect the mechanics....Any info would be appreciated...Thanks Karen J. Please email any respoonses directly to kjmad@adelphia.net

Go with what ya got!

Hi Karen - I think you'd be fine with the 6hp on your Catalina 27. Even if it ends up being less than ideal, it's only 2 weeks - I'm sure you'd be able to make do. Better to use what you have and spend any additional money on boat toys you'll use later! Just my 2 cents, Trevor

Is it worth the hassle?

If you want to use the 6Hp as aux. for a Cat 27, and the 27 is setup for the A4, you'll need to bolt one of those OB motor mounts to the transom, thru the lazarette. Then you'll need to reach down over the transom to the OB to shift & work the throttle, and figure someway to disable the linkage on the throttle handle that returns the OB to idle when you let go of the handle, or have someone sit at the transom to work the shift & throttle while soemone else steers the boat. (I assume you won't want to go to the trouble of setting up remote controls to the OB for such a short time.) You'll also have to find someplace to put the fuel tank on the lazarette hatch. Then, once the A4 is up & running, you'll want to remove & seal the bolt holes you drilled in the transom for the OB bracket. The 6HP will push you along at about 5-5.25 knots wide open in light winds with no chop, but be pretty anemic if you need some oomph. Is it worth it for such a short period of time?

Thanks for the replies to 6 Hp

Thanks for the replies, I figured the 6 would probably do the job (if the boat was setup for it, no mount on it yet) in the past the engine was setup for remote control, and I had to search hi and lo to find a replacement breather cover when the remote controls were taken off, so I don't want to go through that again....At this point, we will probably have it towed from the launch to the slip...Yikes what a way to start the season....KJ

Use a tug

Wasn't clear to me that you wanted the OB just to puch the 27 back to it's berth from the boatyard. To do that, just put the 6HP on an inflatable dink, and use the inflatable as a tug. The best way to attach the inflatable to the 27 is at the hip, with the transom of the dink about even with or just in front of the transom of the 27. Connect the painter from the ring on the bow of the dink to the stern cleat of the 27, put someone on the helm of the 27, and someone else get in the dink and throttle up the dink. The person on the 27's helm steers both the 27 and the dink; the inflatable just acts as forward motive power, but not steering. Pretty easy this way.
