5watt solar panel- dead or alive

i have (2 ) 5watt solar panels on my h28.5- each to one of the 12v 2 batteries.
I usually disconnect both before I engage the promariner dual battery charger, but this last time I overlooked that precaution.
The 5W under the vberth hatch seems fine and the little blue light indicator on the male cigarette lighter housing shines blue as usual. The other 5W mounted on the companionway may have taken a hit as the blue light is out. I put a volt meter on the 2wires after removing the cigarette housing and found that it shows 17.xx v for a fraction of a second, then goes to nothing.
I'm of the understanding there IS a diode in the panel. Is it possible that by engaging the battery charger I "back-winded" the diode and blew it out? This faulty panel was more directly facing the sun when I engaged the charger so maybe that's why it seems dead vs the sister panel putting out less voltage (cause it was not so directly facing the sun) survived?!

Any guidance as to how to diagnose the situation or why the meter jumps to 17.xx volts then flashes to 0!?
Thanks

Multiple DC inputs to your batterys should not need to be disconnected as this a constant current. It does sound like the diode failed so check its front to back resistance reading with a multimeter on ohms scale. Read in both directions across the diode. Should read about 10 times higher one way than the other reverse reading. Can buy diodes at Radio Shack. Hope this helps, Chief

Chief, I saw window signs on a local store that Radio Shacks still around are having going out of business sales.

Actually it's vice-versa, with Sears following RS's lead.

Apparently, us old guys were the only ones repairing items that required parts from RS. Welcome to the throw it away and buy a new one that won't last half as long as the old one did world.
