Got a 5hp mariner *yamaha* outboard that won't pump water.

I've replaced the impeller

Key is in the shaft

Replaced water pipe

Blew out water passages

Still no water.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

James

salt, you can blow it out all you want but you will never be able to tell how much salt buildup is in there. flush with muratic acid very carefully and flush that with fresh water to neutralize and i guarantee you will have water flow.

Rufus is right and you might take the cover off the water passages as well. Just be sure that the bolts are lubed and coat with muratic acid first before removing bolts. Do further cleaning of the passages and do not over torque those 6mm bolts! Chief

I think you have a big chunk of something blocking the main cooling water passage(s). You have to look at how the water flows through the motor and not just flush with muriatic acid, salt away, or vinegar solution. Understand the path the water takes.

The reason I say this is because I blew a head gasket by not properly maintaining cooling water flow in my previous motor. I had the same problem and used the above mentioned products. Oh... they worked all right, but caused more problems.

See if you can get an exploded view of your engine and try and find the water paths. Then you will have a better understanding of where the clog may be. I would think it would be in the primary cooling input on the engine block. You may want to take out the thermostat and see if that is clogged.

Good luck.

Brian: did you read Rufus and I's input? James, do as we suggested and then see what evolves. Try the acid first. Chief

Chief, yes I did and that is why I am advising caution.

As crazy as this sounds....

Get a drill and drill out the above-water exhause holes in the mid case leg. go a couple drill sizes over.

I experiences a similar issue with a Suzuki motor. It turned out the top seal to the water pump was bad enough that the exhaust pressure blowing by the seal on the water pump housing was overwhelming the water pump preventing it from pumping.

Opening up the exhaust vents reduces the exhaust pressure in the leg enough to allow the water pump to overcome the vapor lock.

It is a very cheap fix, and if it works, it is the easist fix you will have ever done with an outboard motor. If it doesn't work you have caused absolutely no harm... You will experience no performance change, and you should experience no audible change....
