I am looking for a mechanic that will honor the 5 year extended Hunter warranty. My prob. is with bow thruster and sump pump, but can't seem to find a mechanic that will fix problem and bill the warranty company. Hunter says to call warranty co. and the co. will only accept a bill from a certified mechanic. Has anyone had a similar problem ? We are in the NYC ,NJ area.

Can the warranty company recommend some one in your area. Did Hunter sell you the warranty.

jms,

that is fairly typical in the industry, as Hunter more than likely does not provide the 5 year extension nor possibly the gear in question. You would be best to go back to the folks that sold the extension. Sadly if you are not next door or at their dock, you will pay for a service call.

As a boat mechanic, I have to side with those who will not do the work and then hope someone pays them back...A small shop can not afford to do all the admin and gamesmanship that the extended warranty folks will make them jump through.

Since much of that gear is "added on" by someone other than the builder, builders are hesitant to get in to the finger pointing game either.

Your only real choice is to have it repaired to your satisfaction and at your expense, keeping and asking for copies of all bills/estimates etc. - and then forwarding (fighting with) the folks involved yourself. There should be no problem asking your mechanic for copies to submit, if he hesitates or will not - find another mechanic.

Hopefully your 5 year extended warranty is still useful, as several have posted here that the company that provided/underwrote them has gone bankrupt...so there is no longer an extended warranty at all...

YMMV, and best of luck

Certified??????

What excatly do they mean by certified or authorized or what.
When my 2007 was still under warranty I got a authorized fisher panda mechanic to check it out and do a minor repair with no problem or any money out of my pocket.
I have not needed to use my 5 year extended warranty so don't know what's up with what they mean by certified,I am guessing they want some one with a certified paper stating they are a real mechanic and not some handy man special guy.
Who makes the thruster and they must have a list of guys that are authorized to work on them.
Should be able to look in yellow pages for certified mechanic that you pay for repairs and than summit paper work.

By certified, I mean someone in my area that has done work under the extended warranty and has gotten paid directly from the warranty company. I am only looking for a recomendation, and a good mechanic, not the yellow pages.

Warranty Repair

What is the problem with the bow thruster and sump pump, and are you sure that the warranty company is still in business. I had the 5 year warranty on my Hunter 44 but the third party warranty company went bankrupt down in Florida. There is a bow thruster repair company in Mystic Ct i recall under the name of Eastern Bow Thruster or something very close to that. Don't know how he would handle the warranty situation.

Pretty sure that the company that sold Hunter the extended warranties went bankrupt. That being said, I'm not sure if it would have covered a bow thruster anyway. I'd suggest contacting the thruster manufacturer and see what they may be able to do. I'd first check electrical connections and shear pin.

Isn't there a Hunter dealer in your area with a boatyard, such a Norton's in Deltaville, VA?
