As preventative maintence, I decided to replace the elbow. After communicationg with Torrsen I found out it is not a Yanmar elbow but was probably installed by Hunter. It is a U shaped affair with a side entry for the waste water on the port side of the elbow. It is attached to an adapter on the manifold with a reducing bushing and a close coupled nipple and has a 2" outlet. Any and all help is appreciated Alan Johnson S/V Valhalla H37C '85

What motor??

It would help if we knew what motor you have. What you describe is not what is on my 3QM30.

mixing elbow

Your 4jhe may not be the stock engine for that boat. Like Gene, mine is a 3qm30. You've got more horses, and a bigger block, so perhaps the stock mixing elbow would not fit in the tiny space (just a theory). You may have to improvise, one like the "rig" you've got, or figure out how to get the original elbow back on.

Alan: Why don't you contact Hunter. I do not think that this is the original engine, but what do I know. They should be able to tell you something. There should be some sort of mixing elbow (where the exhaust and the water output combind) for these engines.

Elbow

I have seen the later 37 Cherubini with your engine. There was no elbow just a down turning exhaust pipe with the cooling water plumbed into it. My 2QM has this type of a system and back towards the transom there is a lift built into the exhaust hose.

Original 4jhe?

I did contact cuatomer service at Hunter and will be sending them a digital pic. soom. I have a Yannmar elbow that matches this engine and we may adapt it from 3" to 2" with a vacuun breaker. We are set to remove the old elbow tomorrow and do a test fit. I do not know if this engine is original. I purchased the boat in '98 and it appears to be original. Thanks for your input Alan Johnson

Good idea to deal with it

Maintenance, including cleaning or replacing the elbow, is a really good idea. Mine had not been maintained properly, clogged, blew the engine hoses and shot exhaust and salt water all over the engine compartment and then the interior of the cabin. Destroyed the exhaust system in the proccess. It's much more expensive to repair and replace than to maintain. And paying someone to clear soot and exhaust from my lovely interior was heartbreaking, and expensive. I am still finding rusted connections in the compartment a year later. Ah, the lessons we learn. Good luck, Sanders s/v Good News

4JHE-Type U

Hi Alan, I have a 4JHE Yan in my '84 cutter. The Yanmar Svc. Manual has two types of mixing elbows: a Type-L stainless steel or a Type-U bronze cast. They mount on the turbocharger discharge. There's a sketch of this item in the manual. If this is the part in question and if you could use this sketch to confirm your part, please let me know and I'll scan it and send it to you. There are no dimensions, but the sketch is very clear.

Been There

When the down-directed mixing elbow on my '81 rusted through and put CO and coolant throughout the boat, I replaced it with the U-shaped mixing elbow that I got from the Yanmar distributor here on the West Coast, Boatswain's Locker. So far, it has served well on my 3QM-30. I don't think it is so much a matter of capacity, as it is an "improved", later design.

Cast elbow

Hi Art. While I do not have a turbo, it sounds as if we are getting close. Please scan and mail to briarcrest@juno.com thanks Alan Johnson

Handled?

Looks like you guys have this issue handled. The 4-cyl was definitely available on the last of the H37Cs. Just not sure if it was an option or standard issue, probably standard.

HI Ed, I scanned the page out of the Yanmar Svc. Mnl and e-mailed it to Alan this morning. Haven't heard back. Art Olive S/V Island Girl

Adapted elbow

After some research on another Hunter 37C in my marina we discovered that his 3 cyl and my 4jhe four cylinder have the same mixing elbow. Maybe, Hunter used the smaller 2" instead to the 3" on the four cyl. so that they did not have to change their exhaust system and thru hull to the larger size. Well I'm going to use an reducing bellows to make the exhaust system the elbow. Thanks for all the input Alan Johnson S/V Valhalla
