Yes. I have an '85 4.5hp merc 2 stroke that pushes mine nicely (when the prop stays in the water, ha). I understand the 4 strokes have more thrust.

Hey LooseDiamond, how does it do against wind and tide? I'm looking for an outboard that's lightweight but gives me what I need against wind and tide.

My rule of thumb is 2hp for every 1000 lbs displacement, and when in doubt, round up.

5hp moves mine across the lake in just about any wind just fine. 4hp should do fine.

4hp should be enough.. !
If you can, do a search on high thrust prop for the 4hp. I am not sure if Yamaha makes them for that low of a horse power. I changed my prop with a high thrust one on my 8hp and it made a world of a difference on the power and gas consumption.
I already had the motor when I bought the boat, otherwise, I would have gone with a lower, lighter, HP motor.
Did you get a long shaft or a short one?

I use my C22 primarily in a marine environment so I also have to deal with current and tide, that's why I was asking about 4 HP. Every time I launch lately, the wind is blowing straight to the dock making it a chore to get away from the launch.

Has anyone used that Power Thruster prop tube with any success? The theory seems good, just curious if it actually works in real life.

I have been considering it for a couple years. I recently heard that the USCG is or will be conducting various tests about them over the next year or two to really identify how effective they are at thrust improvement and safety in terms of protecting against limbs getting caught in the propeller.

Everything I have read seems to agree that (properly designed and installed) they do improve thrust at low speeds, but the thrust gains are usually outweighed by the increased drag at speeds above something in the 5 -10 kts range.

I am very seriously considering one for my boat for next season.

Motor sailing

A 4 hp is just right for inland lakes where you do not have to deal with currents or tides. Larger waters where this is a problem then I would go for a 6 hp, you don't have to run it full throttle all the time.

Wind, that’s another problem, that is solved with sails. A destination problem or time to get there, then motor sail! A 4 hp running with a little throttle will increase your sail speed by 1/4 or more and get you there on time, Have you ever looked at larger used sailboats on the net and see boats that are not that old and have rebuilt engines in them, these people motor sail. 25 to 35 miles to a port in light winds will take all day to get there, with the help of an engine running 1/3 open will push a large boat 6 or 7 knots when the wind alone will only drive it 4 to 5 knots. Half my sailing trips to the Chesapeake Bay require a destination and the only way to get there is by motor sailing.

Gregg, I've got some idea of where you're sailing, and I don't know bud. I don't think I could recommend a 4hp. It may get you by, but if you were here in Southport, fighting the Cape Fear current, more often than not, you'd be in deep trouble. I went with a 6hp, and although the motor runs like the day it was made, I have found it wanting to say the very least. On occasion I have found myself going DOWN the river, bow on into the wind, there's a 5 knot current going UP the river on a rising tide, and there has been some tense moments as the engine runs wide open throttle, just to make 1 knot land speed. I wish that I had went with a bigger motor. And if I keep this boat much longer, I will.

So Chris, would you say that for our NC coastal conditions, a 9 HP is optimal for us? Like you said, you know where I'm talking about and just as soon as the moon, stars, planets and astroids all align and my Jeep transmission is top notch and my trailer is safe (for a change), well you get my drift.... I'm coming down there to learn from the Southport MASTER!!!!!!! Sux to be poe. LOL

Shoot baby, I'm eating popcorn and Kool-aid now on account of my boat addiction. But, yes I am. A 9.9 is exactly what I had on my last 22, and it served me well. I would LOVE to have it now. Now, these new 4 strokes, and/or 4 horse motors are just fine on lakes, maybe even open waters. But again, around here, in these tides and currents, I have already had my ass handed to me on a plate on account of a 6 horse motor. I gets me by, but at my earliest importunity, a 9.9 or larger is on my wish list.
If you ever get down this way, and don't feel like towing your boat with you, we/you can always use mine. It's sitting in a slip, just dying to have the lines cast off of it. Kind of like a thoroughbred snorting at the gate..

Fun thread, guys! My 2.5 fire-breathing 2-stroke wouldn't stand a chance, then! Not much different than grabbing your electric toothbrush and holding it under water at the transom.

We have a 5 HP Honda and it does just fine pushing our heavy wing keeled MK-II. It is the 20" length model with the standard prop. At 5.5 - 6 MPH she get's slightly over 20 MPG at about half throttle. Two years ago on our trip up the coast to Catalina Island we motored 30 miles the first day because there was no wind. The second day we motored another 30 miles up to Dana Point because the wind and the waves picked up, and the wind was right on our nose, so we ran at about 3/4 throttle. Got into Dana Point and topped off the fuel tank. It took 2.8 gallons, and the GPS logged 60 miles under our keel for the two days. You gotta love these new 4-strokes! My old 6 HP 2-stroke Johnson on our old swing keel C-22 burned 3/4 gallon an hour pushing the boat at hull speed.
