I have a 450 with the optional 78HP engine: Yanmar 4JH2-HTE. Has anyone changed the impeller on one of these? I'd sure like to know how it is done as I am convinced Hunter put the engine on a stand then built the boat around it.

Expensive

Hey there, I have a Hunter 45. Laast year the service company changed the impeller of our engine (also a Yanmar but the 55 hp). I remeber that the impeller was verry expensive. Be warned. Happy sailing, Willy Gregoir s/v JASON

Willy....

I have an H45 as well. I can change my impeller in about 5 minutes, and the part costs at most 20 bucks. Why all the expense? My engine is a Yanmar 55HP Model 4JH-TE. MC

Easy, if...

...you have easy access to the impeller pump/housing. It usually isn't a complicated process. I did mine (3HM35F) last week while at a mooring in about 30 mins. Have parts ready. BE SURE TO HAVE A NEW GASKET. 1. Loosen belt 2. Remove hoses and pump (shut seacock) 3. Remove backing plate (6 screws) 4. Remove old impeller (note blade orientation). 5. Clean off old gasket completely 6. Replace new impeller (note blade orientation) 7. Replace new gasket 8. Reset backing plate. Do not overtighten the screws 9. Re-install pump 10. Attach hoses & belt 11. ensure everything's in order 12. Start engine. Wait a few second for water to start pumping. 13. DONE! Hint: When inserting new impeller, lubricate it with liquid dish detergent. You'll blow bubbles for a few seconds after starting, but it fun to watch :)

Speedseal

I clipped an ad from Cruising World for my file on an interesting product called "Speedseal." They have a web site at www.speedseal.com. This item claims to allow you to change out your impeller in minutes by just unscrewing two bolts. "Practical Sailor" (May '99) said, "One emergency change of the impeller with the original cover in place convinces me of the importance of the Speedseal." Cost is about $59 + shipping. Just thought I would pass this along. Wynn Ferrel S/V Tranquility

What belt??

My 4JH-TE has an engine driven seawater impeller. No problems with removing and reinstalling a belt at all.. Are other models different? MC

It's not that easy, guys!

Thanks for all the suggestions, but it ain't that easy! On the upgraded engine, the impeller housing is located behind and below the alternator. It is hard up against a bulkhead on the far side of the engine, with no access except by removing the alternator then working blind in an extremely restricted space, attempting to get at the impeller cover from the front of the engine even though it faces backwards. I can't even get my hands in enough to remove the alternator (I have to get my wife to do it; she loves that...) let alone get at the impeller. Yes, I know it is expensive. A new one costs around $45 just for the part. Yes I already have a Speedseal, but haven't been able to install it yet as I still can't get at the impeller. Has anyone actually done this job on this engine? Nobody in the Pacific Northwest appears to have, so nobody can give me any help. (Hunter says it should take about 90 minutes. Yeah, right.)

Been There Done That

I recently had my impeller changed by a Yanmar mechanic. When I called and told him I had a 450 he said "Oh s___!" I watched him do the job which took about 90 minutes like the factory said. Have to remove the alternator, then work backwards, upside down and blind. I had put off changing it until I returned from our cruise and had about 900 hours. I changed it just in time as one impeller blade had failed. I won't go past 600 hours, or one year, again without an impeller change.

Thanks Bob

Oh well, at least I was on the right track even if I still can't actually do it. How depressing.

I think I am seeing that the engines are mounted differently in differntly 450s. I spent hours changing the impeller until 1) I took off a hose which allowed me to get my hands in there and 2) ordered "Speedseal". I am wondering about my serviceman's comment about servicing the other side of the engine. He wants to cut a door through the shower. Have others done this? I will look for answers in other sections of this page.
