Question #1: Has anyone tried to take either the 450 or the 460 (same hull) onto a tide grid?? We have one at our club, and I am wondering how the bulb keels would handle this. As I recall, the bottom of the keel is quite flat, isn't it? Question #2: Does anyone have a second jib for heavy weather? I know it is more difficult to change sails, but my experience with trying to sail with a reefed jib is awful. I am thinking that a smaller jib which could be carried past 25kn. of wind would be useful. Just put it on before leaving the dock if the forecast is for big winds??? any comments??? Question #3: When reefing the main (those with full batten main sail), do you tie off all the cringles in the sail? I haven't been, but I am thinking it will flatten the sail better if I do. I am trying to find the answer to the best performance trim for these boats in 20-30kn. winds. I have found that we have to give up too much boat speed when shortening sail in heavier weather. I may be optimistic, but I want to be able to shorten sail as the wind increases and maintain boat speed. I have found that we can make good boat speed to weather in winds up to about 18kn. (by our wind indicator, the accuracy of which I question) After that, reefing becomes necessary to keep the boat under control, but when we reef, boat speed drops too much. I think that the jib is useless when furled. The combination of headstay sag and poor sail shape makes it very ineffective. The main does OK when reefed, but could be flatter. I am interested in any comments from those who see similar problems. I realize the boat ain't for racing, I just like to see what it can do. ROwen H460 Mikayla

re question #2

Hi Richard Welcome back! Have you considered a foam luff? They usually help you maintain sail shape beyond what is normally possible. In addition, easy and inexpensive to modify the sail. I have not tried it yet. A possible second option is a hanked on jib on an inner forestay. Take a look at the photo of the hunter 470 in the recent cruising world. It may get the mind working.
