How can you mount it off the stern on a pole? Anyone mount it off the arch?

Couple of ideas

Stephen, I can think of two ways to mount your radar. One using a pole and one using the arch. Give me a call at 1-800-523-7558. If you'd like to discuss your options. Phil Herring & PYI have agreed that our presence on this site is non commercial in nature so I'd like to keep it that way, but I will say that in addition to drive train components PYI also manufacturers radar mounts, so I think we can help.

Mine is on the mast...

but you could mount it on the arch if you use a bracket that mounts the radome aft of the boom and the traveler (possible a custom design, though I seem to remember seeing one on a boat somewhere). An off-the-shelf stern pole usually works easily and can accomodate other electronics also (GPS, etc), but there is usally a problem with being able to do it so that the swim platform locker covers will have room to swing up. If you plan to add davits, a radome can be mounted on certain designs of davits. My only concern about the mast mount that I have is that I get nervous every time the tacking jib gives it a wild kick (I have a gimballed mount) and I watch it swing back and forth like a pendulum. A fixed mount with a guard would protect the radome better, though the performance would be less when heeled over.

Ours is on a stern pole...

as are just about all the other 430's in our marina in SandDego( 6 or 7). It is mounted on the Starboard side of the walk through to the swim platform. It has a plate that bolts through the top of the seat back, and another plate that is bolted through the floor of the starboard aft cockpit locker. That one has another plate in the stern access off rear cabin as a backing. It works great, has GPS and TV also. There is one shot of our 430 Constellation in the photo forum that has a distant aft shot. It should give you an idea..The froum is titled "A Fish Out Of Water" Dick McKee

Looks great, Dick

I have not seen any boats in this area with an installation of the stern pole similar to yours, and it looks great. Most 430's here (and most other Hunters of similar size) use a mast mount, but I believe the stern post is a better choice, as it is not affected by the tacking jib (as I mentioned in my prior post). The few stern-post installation I've seen here usually mount it on the swim platform, through a hole in the locker cover, and that's not good. It's interesting how regional things are. Obviously someone in San Diego did a great job (was it you?), and others complemented him by copying the installation. Wish I had seen this 2 years ago! BTW, does the post go through a hole to the bottom of the cockpit locker (as does the fuel filler on the opposite side?

George, I wish I could take the credit but...

it goes to H&S Yacht sales in San Diego. They sell most of the Hunters in So Cal and their service team came up with the installation. Yes the pole goes all the way through the locker and actually bolts through the overhead of he aft cabin in the compartment where the refrigrator compressor is.. That is where the almuinum backing plate is located I mentioned in the my first response...It enters the locker in the same location as the Diesel fill on the opposite side..

Steve...

Our friend, George M., just designed and mounted a pole on his new Jenneau. You should really take a look at it. He thought of everything and it really looks good.
