I am interested in a center Cock-pit Hunter. What is the difference between a 42' Hunter and the 420. Is there a difference or is it the same boat? Thank you Howard

Different boats

More differences than similarities. See the top of the home page and look at the tab for 'boat info'. From there you can select the models of Hunters and compare. Or, follow the thread at this response. They are both great boats. Just with differences. Rick D.

Off the topic

Howard, Where would you keep it down there? I'm considering a transfer to West Palm Beach and my parents live in Jupiter. Jupiter inlet seems a little to dicey for me. I don't notice too many sailboats around there. I was thinking maybe around Singer Island. E-mail me off line if you can. John Marrotta jpmofmt@comcast.net

420 more like 450

The 42 was deisnged in the early 90's as part of the Legend era (35.5., 37.5, etc.). It's construction techniques and deck/hull joint are of that era. The 420 is a newer design that reflects Hunter's current techniques. You'll see the differences right away in the Boat Info section.

Hi Howard, we looked at both before choosing...

the P42. It is not the same boat. As I understand it the 420 is built on the H41 hull mold, whereas the P42 is built on the H43 mold. This design makes the P42 about two tons heavier in displacement with a bit more interior room. We also prefer the SS arch. Even though it is a P42, it measures just under 45 feet with a 40 pound Danforth anchor. IMHO I think the P42 is a sturdier boat than the 420 for the reasons mentioned above, plus more sail area. We've had our 1991 for going on three years and just love it. Aft cabin, layout, handling, etc. Of course we've never sailed a 420 so do both and then decide. Ours has an eight kilowatt Genset, dual heat pumps, dual reefers, microwave, TV/VCR, etc. We recently added a cruising spin with sock and replaced the original inverter with an Xantrex Freedom 25. Terry P.S. This boat really needs midship cleats. Just finished adding them today.

I've sailed on the 420...beautiful boat!

I have some friends who own the 420 and I was very impressed with the deck layout, and the cabin. The aft stateroom is really impressive. I think Hunter does a great job with center cockpit boats. I wonder why they haven't made more of these. I've seen both the 420 and 45 center cockpit models and it took my marina forever to sell them. I would've purchased one, but, I am not quite in that tax bracket yet. You really gain alot in creature comforts inside and out.
