I have a 1984 first 42 and am trying to remove the wheel for painting. Does anybody know how to remove just the wheel?

I think it's model 250.
You don't mention the age. Some of the older goiot wheels (mid 80's) used a roll pin that needs to be driven out before you can remove the wheel.
