We are about to take our Hunter 410 on the West Marine Bermuda Rally. What are your thoughts on this boat on the 640 mile trip? The boat is provisioned exceptionally for the passage and the crew is experienced. But I'd like to hear your thoughts about the boat itself? Jake S/V Offline

Hunter to Bermuda

Jake, Would love to hear the details of the trip when you get back, I assume this is the West Rally from Hampton, Va. to Bermuda this month. Would like to know how the boat performed and how it compared to similar size boats in the fleet. I sail my Legend 37.5 out of Northwest Creek Marina in New Bern. Best of luck and wishing you a safe and swift passage. Ron

Bermuda Rally

The 410 is an good coastal cruiser, and I know from experience that she will withstand much more than the most likely will want to endure. In a structured passage such as the rally, I am confidnet she will do fine. Typically in offhsore passage making vessels, I look for characteristics such as deep bilges, reduced fall distance (the linear distance you can fall before catching yourself), and protected rudders. (Please see my post regarding offshore vessel specs). The relatively flat bottom and fin keel of the 410 tend to make her somewhat less comfortable on the crew than a heavier modified fin or full keel vessel in a seaway. You might also want to make sure you can effectively heave-to and carry enough warps / sea anchors to ride out any unpleasent weather. I would recommend that you keep an eye on your bulkheads, chainplates and bilges if you run into moderate to heavy weather. Have a great trip and let me know how you do. dave
