I getting tired of replacing those plastic lid latches. Has anyone tired just removing? them? It would seem the weight of the lid would keep it closed fine except in a massive sea state.

Don,
We have these brass ball latches by Sea-Dog on our lids for both our freezer and front and top door of the fridg of our 2000 420. They came OEM and we have never had a problem with them. They are still going strong and sure a lot better than those flimsy plastic ones. Hope this helps

Thanks. Those would take a little rework to be able to mount. I'm surprised they were OEM for your 420 as I would have expected a LOT of similar parts between a 410 and 420 (have the same hull)

We have just one working latch on our refrigerator on our 40.5. The other is missing- I got sick of replacing it and their short life. I have not observed any significant increase in ice build-up, so I think the one latch and the weight of the lid is sufficient.

The PO removed the latches on my 410. I have never replaced them because the system works fine without them. I have not defrosted since June 20 so far this summer and I live aboard. just make sure your rubber seals are in good working order.

Thanks, that's what I suspected!

Incredibly accurate time piece.

Thanks, that's what I suspected!
I own several high end watches.
Love the precision, and the fact that you can count on the time being accurate to +-5 seconds per day on a complex mechanical movement.

But despite the fact these watches, as fantastically expensive as they are, simply pale in comparison to the phenomenal reliability & miraculous engineering of these Southco latches.
After EXACTLY, and I mean really dead on, one week and one second they would break.
How the hell did they ever engineer something so remarkable as that???

I have a 2000 410 and for the last two years I've sailed on the Great Lakes without the latches and had to defrost every 5 to 7 days. I've replaced them this year and continue to keep two large jugs of ice in the freezer to act as a shelf as well as keep the entire volume pre-cooled. I've only defrosted 4 times over the course of 10 weeks on the water this season.

I have replaced broken plastic latches with rare earth magnet latches from Lee Valley Hardware in Canada. Very simple to install and work very well. Bob

I took mine off. Also replaced the gas springs. Have not had any problems with lid popping up.

So I took off the latches a week ago (new ones I put on just a few weeks ago). So far less icing than before and based on the solar controller history I'm using less daily amp-hours. Extra plus is that it is easier and quieter to open/close, which makes it easier to sneak a beer out.
