40.5's with the Volvo engine: How to add oil?

I have a 1997 model and I think the 1996 production year also had the Volvo MD22L-B engine. There is very little clearance between the top of the oil filler tube and the bottom of the drawer in the engine compartment. How is the best way to add oil after a change? A quart container can only be filled half-way in order not to spill the oil all over, and a long tube leading to a funnel outside the compartment almost takes two people to manage and the oil runs very slowly. I've looked for a hand pump that I can simply pump the oil into the oil filler, but I've not found one. How do all of you do it?

warm it up

I would first check the engine or the manual for a secondary oil fill. Many Yanmars have a second fill on the side of the engine for just this reason, and maybe the Volvos do, too. If not, perhaps you could warm the oil up some to make it thinner/ flow easier. Maybe putting the quart bottles in a bucket partly filled with warm water?

Carefully

Hi Rich, I have the Volvo on a 97 H40.5 and have the same problem. I tried the funnel thing with a long hose - takes two. So I now tie a rag around the filler tube to catch any drips and carefully fill from quart bottles. It takes awhile since you can't be in a hurry but so far I haven't spilled too much on the rag.

Thumb

Open oil hold your thumb over top get the bottle in place and move your thumb slowly and let a little at a time go into filler. Its takes a few minutes but it is not bad and pretty clean.

adding oil 40.5

Using a flat plastic bottle (the way most oil is sold today), I work the bottle aft on the port side of the engine, and then carefully tilt it until the neck is over the filler tube. I've gotten pretty good at this technique and rarely spill any oil. The rag or paper towel around the filler tube is a good idea also.
