Dear Rick: For clarification purposes, the single line system was changed to a two line system by placing a downhaul line for each reef point on the main luff which was then cleated off at the mast when reefed. The original reef line was then only attached to the clew, running thru the boom and back to the cockpit. The original setup reguired the reef line to exit the boom and attach to the luff reef point and down to base of the mast and back to the cockpit. I personally found the two line system very easy to manage with no resistence in in the reefing process with a flatter sail when reefed. I did not cut or alter the original reef lines. To restore the single line system would only require the two downhauls to be removed and the reef lines to be again attached to the reef points on the luff which should take about 5 to 10 minutes of labor. You should try both systems to see which one works best for you. From the original owner, Patrick

Thanks, Patrick..

..for the reefing info. I won't be changing it back unless I have a good reason and assume the the system works well as modified. I was impressed by my V32 system, but it is an apples and oranges comparison. Hope the 460 is meeting expectations and we look forward to getting together one of these days when we both settle in. Single Line Reefing

I also had double line reefing when I got my boat. I have always had double line reefing but on my 37.5 I couldn't find a decent way of putting in my second reefing point. What do you do about a second reef? chuckwolfe@mail.com

Chuck, what's the problem?

Chuck, Strange how different boats are so very different. On our 37.5, putting in the second reef results in a much better shaped main and much more efficient sailing than we're able to get with a single reef. What exactly is the problem with your second reef. Maybe if I can solve that for you, you can help me improve my first reef. Robert Pancza

Problem on Second Reef

If you go to double line reefing for your first reefing point, then you have to figure out someway to put in a second reef other than going to the mast and tying them in. I agree with Robert regarding the second reefing point on the 37.5. The first reefing point is so small that most of the old salts that get on my boat call it a flattening reef. In order to shorten sai substantially l, I have to drop to the second reef and I want to be able to do that from the cockpit. The problem isn't reefing with the single line reefing system. My problem is shaking out the reef, particularly if I am short handed (I think that means only my spouse is on my boat with me. I consider that close to sailing single handed.. chuckwolfe@mail.com

Twin Line reefing Again

I re-read Patrick's e-mail about double line reefing and now I am confused. It only make sense to me if you cleat off the luff reefing lines on the boom. Or am I incorrect? chuckwolfe@mail.com
