Anyone know where I can get the factory template for the companionway hatch (plexiglass top). Mine has a few cracks, and leaks pretty bad.
Anyone ever replace this on a 40.5? Looks like I have to remove the traveler, and some other stuff.

Wayne,

I didn't ever replace my sliding Plexiglas, but I have removed it to trim the sides and eliminate a binding.

You do not have to remove the traveler. What you need to remove is the cover just forward of the traveler that conceals the line organizers. This cover is fastened with screws at each corner - keep track of the screws because some are longer than others. This cover just lifts off and allows access to the line organizers and the forward edge of the sliding Plexiglas.

On the bottom of the front edge of the Plexiglas is a strip of white starboard-type material that is attached with screws. This strip is the stopper that prevents the sliding cover from being removed. Once you remove those screws, you can pull the Plexiglas cover straight back and out of the slides.

See the attached pictures for details.

Rich is lucky, my 40.5 (1993) has a one piece cover that extends under the travler and is a pain to say the least to remove. I'm contimplating cutting the front wedge shaped end of it and glassing the cut edge to facilitate running rigging maintenance.

Bill,

I don't understand why the cover over the running rigging is difficult to remove. If I simply remove all of the screws I can pry up the front narrow edge by the smoked Plexiglas fixed port and lift up and pull the entire cover forward from underneath the traveler.

Possibly your cover sticks and is not easy to pull up, forward, and remove?

Edited to add:

Oops, I just realized that I have TWO panels that cover the running rigging. The first cover that I remove to gain access to the organizers and the front edge of the sliding companionway hatch, STOPS at the front of the solar panel and does not extend to the traveler. Maybe Hunter changed the design by 1997 to make it two pieces like I have.

If I understand you correctly, you have just ONE piece that extends the entire way from the fixed port to underneath the traveler. Is this correct?

Mine (1994) is one-piece also, except for the solar panel surround. So, yea, looks like they changed the design. Never had mine off tho.

Wayne,
I know of people who tried to remove the screws from the traveler and failed miserably. Two of them that I know of just cut the cover just forward of the traveler and put in a new system (screws) to hold it. You have to be careful when you cut.

Thanks all for the advice, you all have really been a huge help to a newbie like myself.
Anyway, Hunter finally responded to a email I sent them a few days ago.
One email said I was out of luck for dimensions. I find that really strange. You would expect that the designer has the plans on file. I guess it is not worth their time to look it up.
The second email said they could not provide dimensions, but that I should leave the traveler in place, and just loosen the cover screws enough to get the rear-most section to raise a little. Just enough to get the slider out.
That sounds reasonable. It would be nice to remove it all to be able to clean out under, but..

Anyway, thanks all.
Talk to you all on Monday. Going to boat for another weekend of cleaning, and so-on.

Peace/Grace,
Wayne
