I have a 1995 Hunter 40.5 Yhere is water entering the rear cabin at the bulkhead seperating the cabin from the rear lazerettes. Princably at the base of the teak battens that join the seperate pieces of the bulkhead. I have insepected these areas but can find no source or see any flow except for the water that eminates from the base of these battens. At one time I caulked the thru deck fittings for the deisel and water tanks thinking perhaps the water was getting in around these but they seem intact and the leak has continued. Can someone shed some light on this, I have a sistership on my lake and she has the same problem. Can an owner or the company shed some light on this please. Thanks Bob WIllett SV40love

40.5 Aft Leak

Bill, I have a 94 model purchased used. There was some apparent sealing work done at the areas you mentioned and it is dry now. Also around the hull/deck/rubber moulding area. However, it was wet two times when I first got the boat. In both cases, I believe it was the result of my overfilling the aft water tank. I now try not to do that and let water pump out to evacuate the fill and vent line. Ever since: no problem. Of course, it hasn't rained yet, but when I had the two problems, it was dry. Good luck. I'll be interested in other replies. Rick D.

My leak was the toerail

Bob, Your aren't gonna wanna hear this but the toerail bedding appears to be a systemic problem with the 40.5 model. According to my dealer, he has seen many of that model boat with the same leak you describe. My 1997 had such a leak just before delivery and the dealer removed and rebedded the port toerail. The water would trickle out and soak the aft cabin cushions. The leak has not returned after the rebedding. Search this site for 'aft cabin leak' and you will find many posts regarding the 40.5 leak problem. Unfortunately, water can flow for quite some distance before appearing inside which makes the fault very difficult to locate. How long ago did this leak begin? Did you have it from the start? You are right at the end of Hunter's 5-year warrantee period, but if you can show that the problem has been present for some time, and your dealer supports you, Hunter may be willing to pick up a portion or even all of the cost of the rebedding job. I have found Hunter and my dealer to be very accomodating and they have always gone the extra mile for me. Good luck. Rich

40.5 aft cabin leak

Bob, I have a '93 40.5 and had the same problem. check the screw holes that hold the cockpit floor access panel below the wheel,(it also covers the rudder cables). on my boat, the surface area around the screw holes was slighly recessed and collected water, the panel was removed several times for whatever reasons and the holes were never chaulked. also under this same panel, exactly beneath where water drains, is a large hole for cables & wires (brilliant design),chaulk it good. good luck, Jim Vincent, Toucan

a couple of places

Bob I had leaks in that area from 2 areas. Remove the sterring cablecover in the cockpit. You will notice that there is a wire harness right where the water flows this will lead to leaks. Check the cockpit shower for cracks, this was leaking water in the same area.

Aft cabin leak

I found the leak on my boat to come from the cockpit speakers. I had to reseal them twice. I no longer have any problems. If you look in the aft lockers you might find a brown stain indicating where the water comes in. It trickled down the bulhead & under the cushions

97 Info

My 97 40.5 does not have any of the leaks you guys have mentioned so far (knock on teak) BUT I have developed a trickle leak on the opening port above the port hanging locked aft cabin AND the smaller opening ports above the stove and the starboard head sink. Since I have all these 40.5 owners talking leaks I thought someone could help me with this problem. Do I change out the ports or replace gaskets or what? Thanks for being on HOW. I could write a book about leaks on sailboats. (but not how to fix them all)

Gaskets, Mickey

I got 'em from the manufacturer. Temp fix is to try soft adhesive backed foam weaterstriping on them. Worked for me in the past. Put it right over the gasket. Funky though. Rick D.
