I bought a new Nissan 4 Stroke 6hp this season for a Capri 22. Initially, the engine would quit at low idle when docking. The dealer found that the level on the carburetor was not set quite right, and it was not feeding gas. Engine ran fine for the next two months. In late August, the engine sputtered a few times leaving the dock. Went back in, let the motor run for 20 minutes & it straightened right out. No problems for the next 3 weeks. Yesterday, the motor sputtered a few times going out to sail, then seemed to straighten out. After sailing for 3 hours, the motor wouldn't start. Started once very briefly, then quit. It wouldn't start again. The dealer is going to check it out. I hadn't used the motor for 2 weeks prior to this, and haven't been running the gas out of the motor, since I use it a few times every week. Any chance that not running out the gas caused a clogging problem? Any ideas or suggestions?

the sputtering engine

The problem here may not be the engine, but the fuel tank Specifically the pickup tube in the tank may be cracked and is allowing air to siphon into the line when you get low on fuel Remove the tube from the tank, it just screws out and inspect it By bending it back and forth there should be no cracks present If there is replace the tube, a clear one from your local car parts store I bet this is your problem especially if it’s an old tank and things are fine until you run low on fuel. Nissan 6hp engine - crack in carburetor float

From your description of the problem, I'm not totally sure what it could be. However, I do know that in our area at least two Nissan 4 hp four stroke engines were delivered to dealers with holes or cracks in the carburetor floats which caused somewhat similar problems to what you are describing. The float would fill up with gasoline and the engine would not run as it should. The Nissan 4 hp engines were also delivered with carburetors with the idle screws not set correctly which resulted in the engine not being able to idle as it should. Whether this is the problem or not, it wouldn't hurt to check the condition of the carburetor float.

Air!

Two things happened to me with my 2003 Honda 5 HP four stroke. First, I forgot to fully open the little vent cap on the fuel tank filler cap. Eventually she started to starve for fuel. The other was that my engine sits in a well with a cover. I was running her with the engine cover down and she was choking to death; not getting enough air at all. Now I tie the cover open about 3" and she runs great. Besides what has been mentioned before, you might check it to see air and fuel system is not restricted in any way.
