Sometime ago there was discussion on the problem with Yanmar 3YM20/30 engine Tachcometers. It will ocassionally fail to zero, high or just freezes.
Was there any DIY solution to fixing this problem? I remember one of the suggestion is the voltage to the tachco was too high. Did anyone drop the voltage to the tachco and solved the problem? How was it done?

You just got me thinking about an alternator issuies I had a few months ago. Something to do with dueling alternators. Which I thought was what caused it to fail. But Mainsail says no..Now that I have read your posting. My tach had been doing the same thing off and on a few months prior before it failed. Have your alternator checked, it may be fixing to fail. Couldn't hurt to check alt.

Same

I had same problem with my H-36 and sorry to say I checked and checked and called every tech for help and answers but decided tach was bad and instead of the special built VDO for yanmar $500.00 I got one a VDO on the web $99 and worked great for a week or so :naughty: but than started acting up and working OK and not and peging the needle and redid the ground and worked but started acting up again.
I gave up and most times it works OK but does act up intermittenly but I have not solved the problem I just live with it for now and sorry I threw out the yanmar and most times hold on to all old stuff but not this time because I thought it was fixed and no more saving .
Good Luck
Nick
