Just saw what looks like a great idea. It is a 3hp evinrude that the shaft disassembles so that the whole engine can go in a box about 33x22 inches. Looks great for people cruising. It looks to be about a 1978 model. Anyone seen this before? Thinking about buying this thing. Anyone heard of any problems with this model? The box has evinrude logos on the outside so looks to be a factory option at one time.

Possible with most small Evinrudes .....
Just about all the small hp Evinrudes - those that are direct driven (- no forward/neutral/reverse), separate easily by simply releasing one nut. Once the nut is released the shaaft section will easily disconnect from the powerhead. In these small engines the prop driveshaft directly couples with a spline on the nose of the cranckshaft (into which you should apply grease yearly to prevent corrosion). It does make it VERY easy to store them in tight places. This type of Evinrude will last forever if that spline is regularly greased to prevent rust/rot of the crankshaft nose spline; hardly ever will you find one that has any 'cylinder wear'.

Cool motor but older
I've seen some of those. The OMC 3hp was a great motor. The folding version is hard to find. I'm pretty sure went out of production in the mid-60s. (I've never seen a reference to one newer than about 1968 unitl yours.) Never bought one because I didn't want to depend on using an antique, even if it was so practical otherwise.

Evinrude folder
The Johnson/Evinrude folding motors are hard to find. If you can get a good one that also has the case intact, it would be a great buy. The 3hp Johnson/Evinrude is a great motor. It is a twin, which makes it easy to start and very dependable. Parts are readily available for all old OMC motors. All in all, a great backup or dinghy motor.

1960s era
Like Peter said, it's probably a lot earlier than '78. They were made in the late 60s but I don't know for how long after that. No doubt runs on leaded gas. There used to be gas additives one could use for leaded fuel engines. Would be great for puting into the trunk of a car.

Antique motor
I remember when that motor came out, but can't remember the year. I have a nice 1954 5 1/2 johnson that starts on the second pull, and a 1980 2 1/2 AquaBug that i bought from a friend that was the original owner and it only had 2 hours on it. some of those older motors just run for ever. I also have a 2000 Nissan 9.8 that came with the dingy I bought last summer, If i buy another motor the Admiral said I can live in the garage with all the outboards.

Kenny the motor is a 1968 and there is one on ebay with the current bid of $191.00, Its really a sharp little motor. I showed the Admiral and she said the garage was calling.
