Can anyone recommend what type of oils and viscosities to use in my Yanmar crank case and transmission? The manual doesn't mention multi-weight oil. The manuel also seems to contradict itself by stating in one place that the crank case and reduction gear oils are different and then later they are the same. The boat is located in Northern Alabama were the temperatures are pretty warm for much of the year.

15-40 for engine & 30 for tranny

Ralph: You should get a service manual for the engine. They have the recommendations for your engine & trans. The original specs for the GM engines was only 30wt. Since then they now allow multi-grade engine only. We always use Chevron Delo. You need to be sure that your trans. uses an engine oil and not ATF for some other fluid. Check your model and ask a Yanmar dealer or distributor.

Check the tranny

Sometimes the transmissions are different from what's in your manual. I got a new boat with a 4JH3 in it. When I was replacing the lubricant in the transmission I found that it was a lot more than what my manual said. Checked the number on the transmission, sure enough it was a different one from what was in the manual.

I think that a reputable Yanmar dealer

would be able to answer both my posted and unposted questions. Can anyone recommend a company? Being so far inland and my inexperience with diesels makes this foreign territory for me. Thanks for y'alls patience.

Check the tags

Both the engine and the transmission have identification tags that indicate model, serial and other numbers. They also specify what types and weights of lubricating oils should be used.

Rick and Steve are correct

Use either Chevron Delo or Shell Rotella 15-40 for the engine and straigt 30 for the trans, but do not overfill either. I change the oil in both every 30-50 hours. If the hours have been have been over a short duration of time you can go 50 hours. If its been just minimal to get the boat in and out of the slip over months then use the 25-30 hour time frame. I am more concerned with the trans and typically change it more often, but what ever you do, change it at least once a year. BTW I used to be a diesel mechanic.

Thanks all for the response.

I checked out the web site for Mack Boring. I now have a phone number I can call for advice. Before calling, I will note the tranny # from the engine tag. I will be needing to buy filters and an empellar (sp?) also; it will be nice to talk to someone who can advise me on the purchases.
