'Asahi' sheet winch

Hi All

My Vega is fitted with 'Asahi' self-tailing 2-speed sheet winches that
I am attempting to service. Does anyone know how to remove the main
shaft? I have removed the drum and bearings, the four grub screws that
I thought held the shaft in place but it still refuses to come out. It
is somehow connected to the main winching gear at the base but no
amount of tapping (and a bit more than just tapping!) with a rubber
mallet has freed it up. I have checked out the web but can find
nothing about 'Asahi' winches.

Find it difficult to believe the whole winch has to be removed just to
re-greese etc. however it currently looks like the only option.

Hi Steve

I have a new Harken 16 single speed self-tailer for the coachroof.
Will take a look at this first but I know it uses a central screw to
secure the drum to the shaft whereas the Asahi uses a split ring so it
may be a copy of an earlier Harken version.
We have a Harken distributor in Limassol so he may know how it comes
apart. I'll give him a call after the celebrations die down.
