Peggy, I saw a post about odor in the aft cabin of a 380 yesterday. Our 1998 376 seems to suffer the same issue. We relaced the hose 2 years ago and the odor went with it but it is back. We did the hot rag test and it is very likely the problem again. I bought the best hose I could find. The good white stuff. I had removed the good black hose that held up for 4 years. Later, I found that there is a better quality hose than what WM carries as their premium. Since the head is about 10 feet from the tank and the tank top is a good 4 feet above the head discharge, the hose ia a giant trap for raw sewage. We have altered our habits and flush alot of water after each use and pump it dry 8-10 strkes dry. Anyhow, it is time to replace it again and I am thinking about using Sch 40 or Sch 80 PVC. I am pretty sure I can get the pipe within a foot or two of each end and then use a piece of hose from there. Is PVC a good solution and will it hold the odor better than the hose? Thanks, Mike D

Mike Catalina has been doing a lot of this recently. I remember that the C350 group had a discussion on this board about that problem. You may want to try a search, starting with "C350" and "head" in the forum archives. I also remember a C350 skipper reporting on Gerry Douglas' reply and suggestions. Head Hose
I saw in an earlier post by "head mistress" Peggy, that the best hose for avoiding odor permeation can be found at the web site below. I seem to remember something about it no longer being availble from a U.S. supplier.

Mike, try the aluminum tape
See my previous postings about covering the hoses with aluminum foil. In my boat the tank inlet is over 3 ft above the head's joker valve. I did it over 3 years ago and my boat is still odor free!!! Peggie may still be against it for reasons that have never been documented. Since I wrapped the tubes in aluminum, I don't have to worry about flushing the leftover sewage reducing the amount of water used and thus increasing the time between pump outs dramatically. Also, because of design, in my boat there is a hose from the holding tank to a thruhole used to evacuate the tank by gravity but that unfortunately remains full of sewage unless the tank has just been emptied. To me it is a no brainier: no expense in new tubes every 2 years, no need to use the most expensive and rigid hose in the market, less flush water needed, and no more odor even with sewage left on the hose.

Jose, I assume this is a 2005 post and it looks like the link goes back to a 2002 discussion. Has your foil fix been working for 2 years without replacement?

the aluminum foil tape is still the same, shining as it did in 2002 and working as well as then. (And my rudder is still in place)

I have a 1999 Hunter 380 and the only thing I've changed was the head, replacing the original with a Raritan PHII. But the hoses are all the original stuff. I'm going down to the boat today, so I'll do a sniff test. Maybe because of age, my noise doesn't work as good as yours. On the other hand, I do keep a West Marine air dryer going in the aft cabin to get rid of mildrew. The air is always circulating. Do you suppose that is the problem? Les
