In response to Sanders LaMont's query, and the rest of you guys, I have posted some photos of my windlass installation in the Photo Forum. I've also included a "teaser" here. I'd be glad to answer any questions, as the installation has worked out very well, and we're very happy with it after a year and a half "out here". Dave Simpson

Did you add the rubber roller on it?

I have a H37C. I also have a windlass almost like yours except it doesn't have the roller I saw in your photo. Did you add that after market? Or, did you have to design it and make it yourself? Let me know as I think I would like to add that touch to mine. Let me know if it is a helpfull as I suspect it is. Seems it would make retrieval a little smother. You can e-mail directly at: sailorart@mlode.com Thanks

Art....

The roller gets the chain down low, offering more of a wrap to the gypsy. Yes, it improves retrieval, especially in that it eliminates "skipping" by having more of the chain's links in contact with the gypsy. Look at the pix in the Photo Forum & you'll see that the roller is separate from the windlass, mounted to the bottom of the locker. I found it and its bracket at Minney's Used Yacht Gear in Newport Beach. I think anyone who deals in boat trailers would be able to help you out.

Thanks for the quick response

Thanks for the info, I will look at the photo more closely. I want to do the same. Thanks for getting back to me so soon. Best Regards, Art

Well done Dave.

Thanks for the photos, that is really well thought out. I love the idea of a clear deck. My first step will be to get the proper bow roller in place to handle the CQR. Does your windlass secure the chain and anchor or do you have a stopper somewhere?

One more question, Dave

You photo article has reassured me that I am on the right track - I have almost completed an identical installation with a Simpson Lawrence Horizon 1500. The roller is a nice touch that I think I'll include. How did you deal with water in the chain locker below, as some must inevitably get down there? I thought I'd fiberglass in a small 'dam' at the aft end of the locker and then add a drain & hose going back to the main bilge. Thanks.

Ed &Jim.....

I don't think the windlass, even though it has a cleat built into it, is meant to carry the loads incurred by a sudden squall or somesuch. I use a chain hook and a 10' lenght of 1" nylon line secured to the sampson post as a "snubber". A stopper would be fine too. As far as water getting into the locker below, the anchor locker on my 37c has an overboard drain for green water coming aboard over the bow or by virtue of a rainstorm. The drain and the raised lip on the hawsepipe do a good job of keeping these waters out of the locker below. For the water that comes in with the chain during retrieval, there are limber holes (not included by the builder, I might add!) draining all lockers to the main bilge. If your boat doesn't have them (mine didn't), drill'em! And make sure you keep them clear.
