Does anybody know when production started and ended for the 37C's? What is the serial number range? Bob Miller "Gusty Getaway"

Historian!

What's up Bob? We will probably need JC II to get the real dates. In the Owner's Directory you will find that Bill Young has hull #001. It was built in 1978 but he does not list his HIN so no actual build date. My own 1979 is hull #074. There are two very late models listed, a 1986 and a 1987 but I am doubtful about both. There are no HIN's to check. However there is also a 1986 listed on YachtWorld. The latest boat that I found with an HIN is Mike Harris' 1985, it is #401 and the date is 'H485'. Not sure how that tranlates since my date is 'M79H'.

Hunter Hull numbers

It seems Bob has opened a can of worms here. My numner is HUN37360M84G. I interpret that to be a Hunter 37, hull number 360, model 84 built in July. The problem with this is that I bought it in May '84 so it could not be built in July '84. I suppose we would have to know what year model 84 was built. It must have been '83 to complete the hull and deliver it to Houston so I could get a finished boat in May '84. Now that I think about it, I actually saw the boat in April of '84. Those who have a number of M85 have the 85 model but it was probably built in '84. I was told they stopped building in '84 (by Lone Star Marine in Texas) but they were trying to sell a boat and would say anything. I would not believe the '86 and '87 dates. I guess we will have to call Hunter and find out. Fair winds Don

37C HIN's

Here’s what I found out at http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.html. From November 1, 1972 to before August 1, 1984 My HIN for example: HUN37377M84I HUN = Manufacturer (Hunter) 37377 = Hull Serial Number (I learned somewhere that, for Hunter, the first 2 digits represent the length of the boat) M = “Modified” (Don’t remember where I got that) 84I = The above link says this is the date of certification. 84 is the year and the letter “I” is the month code. Being retired Boeing and knowing how airplanes are certified, I think this date could be anywhere between the date of ordering and the date of delivery. Month codes: (By fiscal year?) Jan F Feb G Mar H Apr I May J Jun K Jul L Aug A Sep B Oct C Nov D Dec E After August 1, 1984: Mike Harris’ HIN for example: HUN37401H485 HUN = Manufacturer (Hunter) 37401 = Hull Serial Number H4 = Date of certification OR Manufacturer. The letter “H” is the month code and I learned at another site (http://www.albanysmarine.com.au/Hin%20Numbers.html) 4 is the year. 85 = Model year. Month codes: (By calendar year?) Jan A Feb B Mar C Apr D May E Jun F Jul G Aug H Sep I Oct J Nov K Dec L

HIN can of worms

This can of worms has been dug into many times with no difinitive answers.I believe you are close but disagree with your diagnosis of first two numbers as length of hull.I say this because if true, somebody has the other half of my boat-please return. My '79 27'HIN is HUN5447GM79H.Possibly in the case of a long production run as the 27 had and limited to 12 digits when over 99 they dropped the length off the head end?Would be interesting to see if very early 27's[under 100]had 27 as first two digits.

numbers

the procedure for numbering hulls is not up to the manufacturer. the coast guard makes and or enforces the rules. the numbers are a standard system with digits designated to id the manufacturer the the year built and the hull numer. including the month built. the number is put on the boat in two places. on the transom and another place not commonly known to users so if the boat is suspected stolen the number can be found and the real number identified. im not sure exactly what year this was requied sometime before 1980 im sure as i was then in the business. I willcomtinue to look for my productions standards books i think it is outlined there.
