Our '37, 1987 boat has a small bow rain leak that we can not find. Can anyone give some advice? Thanks, Phil

Bow Rain Leak

Phil, I have a Hunter 33.5 (1990) and also had (still have some)rain leak into the bow compartment under the vee berth. A lot of it was coming in thru small molded in tubes in the anchor locker that are for running wiring to the nav lights (or future windlass). I caulked them by stuffing a small rag into the top of each then appling caulk. That reduced it considerably. The rag just supports the caulk until it cures. I still have some rain leaking in and think it may around the pad eye at the bottom of the anchor locker that the anchor rode attaches to. I plan to bed/rebed that next spring. Good luck in your pursuit of the leak. Dick Carey S/V Puffin

Chain Locker Joint

Dick caught one of the spots which is a typical culprit (and also the U bolt), but another may be the joint between the top of the chain locker pan and the hull. Imagine water running down the furler line and into the deck lead hole and then running along the underside of the deck. If you ever beat into a sea and noticed water in the V-berth this is the probable path it was taking, that is, over the top of the chain locker pan.

Nav Light tube

On our 1992 335, the small metal tube that goes from the deck to the bow pulpit was not properly sealed and was surprised at the amount of water that entered the V berth. The tube is actually just aft of the anchor locker. I removed the plate around the tube, cleaned and resealed .. problem solved.

Anchor Locker Floor

We had a similar leak on our 460. It was leaking through a seam in the floor where two the glass roving was cut and then reattached to clear a support. I found it by removing all the chain and line from the locker and putting water on the floor. I checked everty few days until the level stopped changing so I could determine the location of the leak. Made a repair and then retested. My boat has two drain holes at the bottom of the locker. The floor should be built up with resin and made slightly higher at the centerline so that all water immediately is drained rather than sitting in the bottom of the locker.

Same thing

Phil, I had the same thing on my '93. It was a crack in th drain tube between the anchor locker an the bow. I filled the hole with a slurry of epoxy and West System fibers, let it set, then drilled it out. Leak fixed and no subsequent problems. Jim

Roller furler

I have a 1987 35. I spent $2800 repairing a factory screw up. The roller furler line (Hood below deck fuller) goes thru the deck into the rode locker. The hole is covered by a nice fitting on the deck. Take off this fitting. I think you will find Hunter did not finish off the inside of the hole. Water can seep (wick) directly into the deck and below. I had to re-core the deck from the bow to back to within 8" of the chain plate (port side).

Persistent Problem

The wet V-berth has been a persistent problem for me for a few years on my '88 L-37. I was always focusing on the seam of the toe rail to the main deck. Now I have something else to check. My hopes are up. Thanks guys.
