1. What is the discharge air temperature of the unit when it's hot outside?

2. Have you considered or do you shut off unused cabins when the unit is ON?

3. Do you have outlets in each cabin? Can they be turned on and off?

IMHO, as an air conditioning engineer, you won't see much improvement by adding that small additional capacity, unless your unit is old and near the end of its useful life. Have you had it serviced? Is it working properly (I know, you think it's not, but there could be a bunch of reasons: clogged air filter, condensate clogged...)

Frank,

I'm no expert, but I can tell you that my 30+ year old, 16,000 btu, Cruisair (with new compressor in 2013) will cool my H37c throughout the heat of summer in Jacksonville Fl without any extra sun shades.

So it sounds like your AC is working, just not performing good enough to keep up with the heat. Nobody will be able to tell you if it is better to fix an old AC or replace it. If it's over 20 years old, the standard would be to replace it. But as I said, I replaced the compressor in my AC and kept the air handler because it was the easiest thing to do.....but maybe not the smartest.

You asked for help, so here are some basic troubleshooting ideas you may try. Have you had the unit checked by an AC tech to make sure the system is correctly pressurized? Or even before that, have you checked that the cooling coils/air filter are clean? Do you have enough water flow through the heat exchanger? Have you tried cleaning the heat exchanger coils (there are posts in this forum that discuss circulating acid through the system to clean calcium buildup inside the tubing).

If you get no results from troubleshooting, then find a marine AC technician. Ask your friends if they can recommend a good tech. If you find a good one that you can trust, then you may as well follow his advice instead of mine.

Finally, new systems are more compact than the old ones. You may end up with a new empty locker if you install a new replacement unit.

Good luck.

Midnight Sun has a 16000 BTU king Air unit installed, which is ducted to the vberth and the aft cabin (quarterberth). It will get my boat down to 68 in the summer in Kew West or Mexico. It is 24 years old. It can't be capacity. I would check cooling water flow. Calcium will build up in the lines over time. Flushing the system with pool acid diluted three to one will clean it out. It may have to be done a couple of times. Be carefull, the stuff is nasty.

Hello and thank you for your input, I have tried everything I know cleaned strainers install bigger pump, cleaned condenser coil.cleaned condensor with acid. just runs and gets hot and stops running before it cools down. it actually gets hotter in the boat than outside.

the man that purchased Sailors Exchange owned or still does a marine air conditioning company he is not far from you ...go over there and ask him for advice on your problem ...the only thing i can think of that you may check is the Freon charge and make sure it is up to the proper amount and maybe the fan speed i have one of theses unites and some time it may be a relay in the electrical panel inside the unite malfunctioning and it has a lot of temp switches could be one of those going bad hope this has helped in some small way
